I had a question about Case v UR earlier as well...

the difference is mostly if you're more interested in having a more liberal-arts education (learning what you want to learn) - which is UR's focus
or having a more career oriented education (Pre____) - Case's focus

Location & Student body are also very different...
One is more Midwest, the otehr i NorthEast, and I heard the social life at UR is more active than Case (i have a friend who goes to case now, she likes it there but she says the ppl there are kinda geeky xD)

Both Universities are very much involved in Research, they rank pretty damn high on the lists in terms of Reseach funding in the sciences. Heard It's harder to get good grades at Case due to grade deflation - might just motivate you to work harder though.

visit both and see ur self =P
and oh yah and behappy's right - dont listen to Jenny, she's just trying to get a place at UR cuz she got waitlisted =/

I know that rochester's awesome because I've been there. The school's reputation and academics are superb and their open curriculum is very much like that of Brown.
I don't think you could go wrong with Rochester, it's honestly a wonderful school.

Actually Awakian, Rochester has a very big Pre focus also, it's just that it's open curriculum allows for more of a liberal arts feel while concentrating on something leading to well rounding prepared 'pre' students. Students are known to Triple major at Rochester, which is a relatively hard feat to achieve (though i've heard of someone doing that at UChicago, which i think is INSANE!).

SebmaFSX_53, about undergraduate research at UR, you should take a look at the journal they publish of research papers written by undergraduates at UR. It certainly holds its own against any Ivy type school.

Does anyone know what journal that is? Just curious
I'm UR 2010 =)

That's only because the acceptance rate of Rochester is higher than Case, but it doesn't reflect the quality of the university. Again, decide after visiting both!

Heh. Sorry, I've been a bit busy with schoolwork.

Anyway, I actually wound up enrolling at Case yesterday. In the end, I strongly preferred to go to a school with a sizeable mechanical engineering department. Rochester is definitely a great school, but Case just kind of "clicked" with me. The harder transition (assuming it is true) at Case isn't really an issue for me, since I already take most of my courses at a university.

Of course, hopefully Carnegie Mellon will accept me off the priority waitlist and invalidate the entire issue. :D

tyrdium, I have immense respect for the engineering programs at CMU (esp EE and CS); they are as effective as MIT & CalTech IMO and thus are an underrated "selectivity bargain". I agree that Case engineering is quite a bit larger than UR, and larger is better. UR is probably better than the other 2 in the Humanities.

Journal of Undergraduate Research, University of Rochester
. My D received a copy when she toured, Volume 2 Issue 1, Fall 2003. It's a full color, heavy stock journal.

Maybe if you poke around you can find an on line version. Certainly it would be in their library. Does anyone know if they still publish it?

Here are some article titles from that issue, "Cell Adhesion Molecules in Asthma", "Epilepsy and Neurogenesis", "The Riemannian Metric and Curvature Tensor on a Manifold", "Review: Tissue Engineering". These papers are written by undergraduates (!).

I suspect if they mailed a copy with each acceptance letter, their yield might double! ;)
