My nephew is deciding between Case and U of Wisconsin - any advice?

You haven’t given us anything to go on…

Good point -my nephew is interested in CS, Chemistry , Economic and business. His first choice was MIT - WL .
He was also WL at Case but was taken off the WL yesterday and offered 22K merit. He also really like Michigan but was also WL! …now it is between UW and Case. Well I think Oberlin is also still being considered. Any advice ?

No bad choices from a academic standpoint. Just go for best value and then by personal preference.

What are some things that are important to your nephew? What kind of social atmosphere? A big or small school? Urban or rural setting? Any other perks (weather, Greek Life, sports)? These are all things to consider. If money is not an issue, it’s all about going to the place that you can picture yourself being happy and proud to be going there.

What is the cost difference? Is that a big factor? It is really nice that he got merit aid off the waitlist, that is quite unusual anyplace.

Wisconsin is a much larger school, of course. It is strong academically, but they also party hard there. Case is quite good in CS.

All good questions that I don’t know - he likes both schools - I know that he likes the diversity of UW. it is hard because he has not decided what to major in. I think the real surprise was that he was WL in the first place his stats are in the 75th percentile. He WL at 6 schools. Cost is not a factor.

Not sure about UW, but you do not need to declare a major at case until end of sophomore year. You are applying to the university, not to a particular school so as an undecided at Case, you can choose anything, double major or add a minor. Maybe something to consider… Of course if you are going into any engineer field, you may want to decide sooner than later.

Case is a medium sized private university, 4,200 undergraduates, with with a four year graduation rate of 63% and a six year graduation rate of 78%. That is likely to go up as Case Western’s test scores are rising in the last three years. . U of Wisconsin is a state land grant university with nearly 29,000 undergraduates, with a four year graduation rate of 53% and a six year graduation rate of 82%. Madison and Cleveland are very different environments. I would say Wisconsin has somewhat more drinking, as do most state universities, and Case Western has a more mellow party scene, although Greek life is lively there.

What sort of diversity? In the most recent freshman class at UW-
AA = 2.3% . AA +Hispanic + Asian = 13%
Item B2 in CDS:http://apir.wisc.edu/publisherssurvey/CDS_2013-2014.pdf

Not to put it down. They are trying hard to increase diversity.

You have two good but very different choices. There will be a lot more “adults?” at Case. What I mean is that Case has about 4200 undergraduates and 5000 graduate students. The Cleveland Clinic is in the area as are the symphony, art museum, botanical gardens and Cleveland Insitute of Music. Most of the students I know who go to Case are very serious students and love Case. Wisconsin will have far more undergraduates than graduate students and it will be apparent. My D goes to Purdue which is like Wisconsin in terms of size although Madison is typically considered superior to the Lafayette’s. She chose Purdue over CWRU and loves her experience there. You’re choosing a private school experience vs. the Big 10. Again no bad choices just different.
