Case Western Class of 2019 EA Results

Yay! I got accepted to CWRU as a University Scholar! I probably won’t post all my stats, but I have a 35 on my ACT, and an UW GPA of 3.97. All my courses are rigorous, I think I wrote an amazing CA essay, and I was on good terms with my regional representative. Wishing the rest of you luck :)

@booey1234‌ Look page a page or two. Someone said that once you’re accepted into the university, you can major in whatever you want. Congrats!

I got accepted with a University Scholarship!! I got a 2070 on the SAT (720 CR 690 M 660 W) and have an unweighted GPA of 3.84. I showed a lot of interest, wrote a good CA essay and great supplemental essay, great teacher recs, and had a lot of internships and shadowing experiences with doctors. Good luck to everyone else!!!

@Sdgal2‌ ok, i wont win any awards soon, but how can i show interest. should i schedule an interview? wouldnt it be awkward cause i already got a decision.

@toesocksshoe, you can show more interest by emailing your admissions counselor or the office of Admissions with your updated grade, even for the 3rd quarter. Also, if you can get a teacher to write a letter to show that you are still working hard or have an upward trend, that would be good too. The week before the application deadline, my D sent in letters from all core teachers, to show that she was improving in one class and remain strong in the others. And tell them what you’ve told us about your ADD.

My S has similar stats and was deferred as well. You just never know what admissions is going to do.

Deferred :,(

Applied to which school/college: Mechanical Engineering

Objective:

State (if domestic applicant): Ohio
Country (if international applicant): na
School Type: suburban public
Ethnicity: Caucasian
Gender: Female
Income Bracket: Low like <$45,000
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): nope

Reflection

Strengths: I do a lot of extra curriculars while still surviving IB and staying in the top 5% of my class. And they aren’t random. There are 2 themes: music and volunteer/leadership/administratively oriented. There are about another 5-6 things I could put under ECs

Weaknesses: I got a C in calculus last year not because I’m not good at it, I got a 5 on the AP test, but rather because my teacher graded us all extremely harshly.

Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: Honestly, looking at this thread, anyone who has a 31 (their average ACT) or lower got deferred unless they had a hook. Their applicant pool grows significantly every year so I think they are just waiting to find our what kind of people they get in RD so they don’t deny a 35 from RD because they accepted a 31 from EA/ED

Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: Accepted at THE Ohio State University and University of Akron
Haven’t heard from anywhere else yet

General Comments: Idk. I understand why Case is doing this but I can’t say it doesn’t feel like they are playing us by deferring everyone with an ACT from 29-31.

@AcceptMeOrNot I was deferred too and am very confused about their admissions decisions. I was very confident I would get in. I have a 4.2 weighted GPA, 31 ACT (34 science and 33 math and applied chemical engineering), I had a great letter of rec from my math teacher (I read it), I row, tutor middle schoolers, do lots of community service abroad, etc and I had a fantastic common app essay. I am very astonished too.

Applied to which school/college: Biology

Reflection

Strengths: I think my extracurriculars, essays, and recs were strong. I go to a rigorous school and have an upward GPA trend

Weaknesses: GPA, and my ACT is so-so
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected:Probably because of what I listed under strengths? I didn’t show much interest in the school

^^Forgot to mention in my post that I was accepted

H

@Traveling19‌ It is what it is I guess  idk it might be because they want to see my first semester grades. I might ask my counselor to call Case just to check it out. Hoping that there’s nothing inherently wrong (?) with my common app since Case has no supplement. WE’RE ALL GOING PLACES SO DON’T WORRY!

Country (if international applicant): USA
School Type: Public
Ethnicity: White
Gender: F
Income Bracket: prefer not to say
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): None

Reflection
Strengths: Well rounded student. Little to no free time. Demonstrated passion for engineering and scored high on the math section of the SAT. High gpa, took the most rigorous classes offered each year of high school, took no free periods as a senior. Essay reflected me as a person.
Weaknesses: SAT
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: I may not have the highest gpa or sat but I definitely work very hard, take the hardest classes my school offered, and fill my schedule with thing I am passionate about. I also have an job. I got accepted because I am very involved in my community, too.
General Comments: Congrats to everyone who got accepted! To those rejected/ differed, don’t worry you will get into college!

Decision: Accepted

Volunteer/Community service:

Summer Activities: Chillin
Essays (rating 1-10, details): 8-9. Probably the strongest part of my application. Wrote about thinking I was a clam when I was little and starting a philosophy club at my school. It included the line “One can’t be a shellfish without being selfish.”
Recommendations (rating 1-10, details):
Teacher Rec #1: 9
Didn’t get to read it but it was from my psychology teacher of 2 years, who loved me, so probably a very strong recommendation.
Teacher Rec #2:7
Didn’t read it, the teacher (taught me biotechnology my junior year) was pretty neutral toward me but I did well in his class.
Counselor Rec:8
Basically wrote it myself.
Additional Rec: N/A
Interview: I interviewed over the summer and I think I said some really stupid things such as “Learning has always been a joy to me” but otherwise it seemed to go pretty well.

State (if domestic applicant): Pennsylvania
Country (if international applicant):
School Type: Public, STEM school, ranked #1 public school in the state for the past 2 years
Ethnicity: Caucasian
Gender: Female
Income Bracket: >$200,000
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): none

Reflection

Strengths: Sports (my acceptance email said something like “we are impressed by your commitment to cross-country and track”), essay, and first recommendation.

Weaknesses: SAT math score was low, didn’t do much community service

Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: Cognitive Science (the major for which I applied) is one of the less popular majors at Case. I also showed a lot of interest because Case is my first choice. Maybe going to a STEM school helped?

Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: Accepted to the University of Vermont. Applied to Lehigh, RPI, Colorado College, Northeastern, Pitt, UC-Boulder, and Richmond but I won’t hear back for a while.

Recommendation (1-10, details):
Teacher rec #1: Spanish teacher that I had for 3 years, think she liked me
Teacher rec #2: Chem teacher I had for 2 years, think he liked me too
Counselor rec: Our school has 2 counselors for 2400 kids and I had never talked to them before, so probably not very great LOL
Additional Rec: XC/Track coach, he let me read it and I guess it was pretty good, he really likes me
Interview: I think it was decent, we just talked really casually, I asked a ton of questions

Other:
