Case Western or Penn State?

I am currently a senior and I am deciding between Case Western and Penn State for Engineering. I think that I want to do Mechanical engineering. Do you have any insight on which school is better?

Which one is cheaper?

Both of them are ABET accredited in Mech E. Which one is less expensive?

Since I am in state, Penn State is cheaper, but Case was very generous, so the cost of Case is relatively close to that of Penn State (without any aid).

They are very different in terms of location. Think about where you want to spend four years, the type of environment, city vs. rural, types of students you will be with, and social activities. If you can visit both, that could help you decide.

The environments at the two schools are polar opposites. Consider that along with the program at Penn state is much stronger (14th in mechE).

I’ve read a lot about Case from this website and it seems like a really boring place (ohio) where studying is basically everything. And there was something about races self-separating that was very off-putting to me. I’d go with Penn state especially since you’re in state.

^ From a former NYer/NJite, Ohio is not boring. Obviously you’ve never been here.

They are both great schools, but very different. I’d urge you to try and visit both, and call the admissions offices to see if you can arrange for a tour/ meet up with engineering students from each school so that you can get a better sense of the students, program, experience etc.

Congratulations on having such a wonderful choice!

Penn State has the stronger engineering program

Case Western has a much smaller undergraduate student body and class sizes

Total Undergraduates
4,227 – Case Western
38,594 - Penn State

student/faculty ratio
9:1 – Case Western
17:1 - Penn State

Classes under 20 students
60% - Case Western
39% - Penn State

Penn State is the much respected school. Become a Nittany Lion.

not completely clear on that

@Erin’s Dad

You’re right; I haven’t. Sorry if I offended you. It’s just that according to a lot of Case threads on this website there seems to be a pretty solid concensus that the area that Case is in is boring. Especially in comparison to penn state which is a big party school

No one cares about engineering rankings. Look at what research labs they have if you want a research type job, and look at where your favorite companies do on campus recruiting if you want to work for a company. Also consider whether you want a medium sized private school or a huge public school and what culture you want.

I agree with anniezz. Schedule in-depth visits with both schools so you can get a better idea of what you think about each.
