Case Western Reserve, U of Pitt or U of Miami?

What are your thoughts. CWRU, U of Pitt, or U of Miami? Was accepted to all for Microbiology. I’ll be OOS.

bump

DS has almost the same choice to make, subbing Rochester for Miami. I don’t think you can go wrong with any of them. Whatever you do, don’t read too much into the knee-jerk bashing of Cleveland and Pittsburgh in making your decision. Neither is Paris or NYC, but both cities are far more appealing than their outdated reputations indicate and have much to offer.

Has she decided or is she waiting to hear from other schools?

Did you receive any kind of scholarship from any of them or qualify for any need based aid? All of the schools are pretty respectable so I’d be confident in saying that your answer is in the numbers.

Did you visit? And I agree, bottom line is a big consideration.

That’s a good point to keep in mind, but other than $$, what are your thoughts? Am thinking of medicine as my end goal.

For medicine, Case would be a great option, as it is affiliated with 2 med schools and has great related programs. My kid is happy there, but we also liked Pittsburgh when we toured it (after a visit at CMU, which he didn’t like). Good luck!

This is what I know about Miami and for my kid this would help her make up her mind if she was stuck between three schools - Miami has a really good D1 hockey team. We are season ticket holders for a local college team and Miami is in our league. College hockey is so much fun. That might be completely unhelpful or give you something to new consider.

Cost is all that much more important if you intend to go premed.

Did any of them give you a med school guarantee?

@mommdc what do you mean by “med school guarantee?”

Well for med school, I know that Case Western’s Graduate Medical School is ranked 24 nationally for Research while UMiami is ranked 45 and UPittsburgh is unranked. This is for graduate school though and there’s no guarantee that just because you go there for undergraduate, you’ll be accepted for graduate. Also, medical school is expensive so I’d choose the most financially sound option for undergraduate and then apply to the med schools you want.

Something like this where you would have a conditional or guaranteed spot in a med school after your BS?

http://www.miami.edu/admission/index.php/undergraduate_admission/academics/dual_degree_honors/honors_program_in_medicine/

did you apply to this?

Getting admitted to med school depends mainly on high MCAT sore and high GPA. How can any university guarantee admission as an undergrad?

@Homeless2Harvard I don’t think you examined that list closely enough; Pitt’s med school is ranked higher than either of the other two at #16 for research. Jonas Salk developed one of the great medical accomplishments of the 20th Century, the polio vaccine, at Pitt. That said, there is not a 1:1 correlation between a medical school’s reputation and its undergrad preparation. Rice doesn’t even have a medical school, but would rank way up there on the list of schools providing good prep.

They are all great schools. The first thing I would look at is what is your next cost. Were you offered scholarships?
Have you visited them all?
Do you plan to go to medical school or get a PhD?
How do you feel about cold weather?

There are certain programs, that are very competitive and that you have already had to apply to, that are a 7 or 8 year program to get a BS and MD. For example, http://admission.case.edu/academics/ppsp.aspx. If you are accepted, then you did not apply to this so no need to worry.

I got a full scholarship from U Pitt. No word yet from CWR or U Miami. In the meantime got into Brandies, Northeastern and UCSB. In a good place but as confused as ever… Thanks for

Pitt’s partnerships with UPMC are top-notch.
