***Case Western Reserve University Class of 2020 Applicant Thread***

My daughter got a copy of the magazine too. Case is nowhere near University of Chicago’s blitz which was blatant in its goal of trying to goose rankings. Getting the magazine after my DD applied is pretty smart.

I know a few people who applied to Case last year who got wait listed. Because Case is getting such a big school of applicants so quickly and many of them are from VERY high achieving kids, they are wait listing a lot of kids who are really up there because they don’t think they will actually end up attending which brings down their rankings.

I do wonder how Case views their legacy applicants that are also (as @KateLane2343 puts it) “VERY high achieving kids”. Would this make the adcom think the student is more or less likely to attend?

Case has weighed demonstrated interest heavily for a very long time. Decades, literally. So the huge influx of applications isn’t what’s causing those high achievers being wait listed. They’ve been doing this literally for decades.

Anybody know if there’s a specific date EA applicants are supposed to hear back? It just says by the 15th on the website.

If you look at the old EA threads, it’s been announced on a Saturday and the day before they send an email confirming you will hear the next day. So, the best guess for this year would be next Saturday, December 12.

Until then, here’s some light reading on the admit/deferred/rejected EA from last year:

Thanks @palm715! But unfortunately, it’s not very reassuring since the decisions seem so all over the place! Lol.
I wish my son could have applied EA since this is one of his top choices. The agony would soon be over then.

Wow, that is an interesting thread. I find it oddly calming, though, since I was inclined to take any upcoming acceptance or rejection as a kind of predictor of how things were going to go with some other schools as well, and really it just looks as idiosyncratic as any other selective school. Good luck to all, especially to those for whom Case is a top choice!

@SnapApp University of Rochester, SUNY Geneseo

@myjanda I was contacted by the assistant head coach, but I never replied (not sure I really want to swim in college)

@magikarp256 The last two years they have released their decisions the Saturday before the 15th (which would be the 12th this year) so I doubt they will wait until the 15th unless they had some major problems

I think it will be the 12th, if not the 14th (I doubt they’ll go all the way to the 15th, they haven’t the last two years)

@Batman498 Well then the 12th seems likely, although I guess we won’t know until we hear from them

Somewhere between 7am and noon on Saturday based on recent history.

Also, I noticed today my application status page changed. It used to have a menu bar (Home, etc.) but now it’s gone. Seems like a bad sign for me Trying not to be paranoid, but I really like Case and I am questioning if I should have gone ED instead of EA

@pjreil: The same thing happened to me, and I’m a little worried now. Were they originally on the top of the page under the CWRU logo?

don’t freak out too much, they’re probably just getting the website ready for releasing decisions or something

Yes, but maybe it happened to everyone…right?

Same thing happened to me… Don’t think it’s anything to be worried about; I’m sure it happened to all applicants.

Hi guys! So I’m applying to Case RD, and was wondering how you all feel about their waitlisting and rejecting of overqualified kids. Case rejected some perfect scores / 4.0s from my school last year, and I presume it’s because of lack of interest. Do you think a campus tour and high school info session are enough for demonstrated interest to overcome any over-qualifications?

I mean none of us can tell you for sure. (and no one except admissions knows why those students you referred to were rejected)
Personally, I think visiting could be enough. I couldn’t even visit (I live far from Ohio) so I’m worse off than you are in that regard.

@james1998iq: Alright. It is very true that CWRU denies some “overqualified” students with the perfect GPA and test scores, but I feel like those “overqualifications” do not necessarily opt out a student. Other parts of the application are considered, too, like the essay (I’m not too sure how much CWRU weighs the essay into the app, but it is significant), extracurriculars, etc. A weakness in the essay or certain extracurriculars were most likely the reason why these “perfect” people were denied, deferred, or waitlisted.
In my opinion, I feel like campus visits do not help or hurt your decision (UChicago’s admissions tumblr even said it doesn’t do anything to an application). It would be a great opportunity to take a look at the college and its environment, but it won’t really make your application stand out.
After all, there are people of all levels who have not visited the college but have been accepted. A student at our school got a 23 on his ACT and a cumulative GPA of a 3.5 and got accepted.
