I'm having trouble deciding between Washington and Case- I visited both and I loved the people at Case, but Washington's campus is incredible, and I really could see myself there. In terms of academics, both are stellar, but Washington has more top rated programs in engineering. However, Case has smaller class sizes, which is also appealing. The weather in Washington is also much better, and as a resident of the west coast, it's a short commute home. Washington also has internship opportunities in abundance, especially since microsoft and amazon are both in seattle. i have scholarship money from both schools, which would make tuition fees about the same, so money is really not an issue. one problem i did find with case is that sometimes its really very boring, however in washington thats not really the case- the D1 athletics and the social scene are great. any advice to help choosing?

I live near Case and have been in Cleveland for 10 years, so I am probably biased, but Case has a very loyal following. Students are generally very happy. I interview for medical school, so I see very strong applicants coming out of Case, who in particular have received great advising.

Cleveland is much warmer than Boston (where I came from), it is unusual to be below freezing for more than a few days in the middle of winter (freezes and thaws a lot though - my roof!!!)

Advantages of Cleveland are surprisingly many, and we are very happy to live here:
Good schools, friendly atmosphere (as long as you don’t root for Michigan), low cost of living, no traffic, free parking, hub airport, many ethnic communities and great restaurants, and the legacy of the Rockefellers (Cleveland symphony, art museum (free), botanical garden) as well as the basketball team, rock and roll music scene and hall of fame, science center, lake for recreation, and vibrant theatre life (6 playhouses show immediate off broadway - largest theatre community outside of NY).

Washington and Chicago are each about 5 hours away. An easy weekend trip.

My daughter has just chosen Case, BUT…in reading your message it seems that you really have already chosen…Washington. Go with your heart.

thanks, yeah- i definitely feel that case has friendly people and that cleveland’s cost of living is low. however, my reservations are about academics, especially in engineering, because the programs dont seem to be ranked as highly as washington’s. also, amazon, microsoft, and the silicon valley are nearby, but i feel that case doesnt have the same recruiting opportunities as washington

Case is going to be a lot higher ranked by the time you graduate there and is the better of the two schools for engineering

really? could you explain what makes case engineering better than washington? by rankings, faculty, research thats done at washington, and the job opportunities available, washington seems to be beating case. very curious as to the difference in their departments

Based upon your original post, I can’t tell what it is you are struggling with. You seem to be strongly leaning to University of Washington, which is a great school and very good engineering programs. Case’s advantages are smaller size and probably a more uniformly serious and studious student body (which may be a plus or a minus depending upon your viewpoint). I think biomed engineering is stronger at Case, if this happens to be your interest. But, otherwise, you sound like you have made your choice?

As a Seattle native, I chose Case over UW to get away from home. I personally found Case to be a better fit – smaller cohort size made it easier to know more people, and the student body was more studious as a whole. That being said, UW is a great school, and I do miss the PNW.
