Case Western vs. Bucknell

Hey, i'd just like some opinions on how these colleges compare overall. Including academics, social, location. Let's leave out scholarships and assume I'd be paying the same for both.

Academics- really can't compare... One is a research university, the other is a lac but if you are into science, both are excellent
Social- Don't know about Case as I went in the summer, but Bucknell is a very preppy school and when I went there the kids seem nice and i heard that it is definately no where close to stone cold sober
Location- Bucknell is beautiful- you can't match it... Case is a nice campus but is in Cleveland...
I liked Case over Bucknell but chose Rochester

Totally Bucknell over Case. Bucknell is a great college experience with a great social life, case is an urban commuter feeling school in not the best city. Its much more grad school focused as well. The only strike I have against bucknell is that it is conservative, but that is only because I am not.

any other thoughts?

My parents went to Bucknell and had great experiences. The campus is beautiful (I have been there) and the academics are oustanding. Conservative, if you're like that haha. My Dad went on to Penn Med from there (accepted also and JH and other prestigious Med schools). I'd choose Bucknell.

benndaman, what do you want to do is the big question... :)

I have a friend at Case and he is totally miserable there. Mainly because there was really a lack of social scene and fun things to do. He did smoke a lot of weed though.

He is transfering to OSU in a couple of weeks.

According to him, the general response got when he told people that he was leaving "Good for you."

Honestly right now what I would most like to do is medical research at some point. I know I'm a senior in high school so I cannot reasonably plan my life out, but I would like to get a phd eventually in order to pursue medical research, possibly in areas such as stem cell research. Thus possible majors could be biology, biochem, microbiology etc. I also considered biomedical engineering, in which case if I decided not to pursue a phd I could simply pursue engineering in a similar field of which I am also interested.

Academically it sounds like Case would be a better fit for you (especially if you have second thoughts and decide to go in to BME). However, you might want to visit the campus first and find out if the social life is right for you...

A few things to consider about Case:

Case is great, but you are only a block or two (or less) away from really bad areas

Downtown Cleveland is pretty dead, other then the flats area.

The job market is horrible here right now

It's cold and it snows alot in the winter

It's hot and humid (90%+) in the summer, I personaly wouldn't cool off in lake erie

Getting around here (especialy in the winter) with public transportation can be a bit tricky IMO, if you drive you better be able to drive in the snow

Cost of living is reasonable

Just some things to consider from a local

chris - or any others - as far as those bad areas are concerned - is it actually dangerous at case itself or just if you were to wonder into those areas. Furthermore, i will not have a vehicle, is public transportation horrendous or just tricky?

IMO, the Campus is safe, it's just if you head a few blocks out. I don't live in downtown cleveland so I don't use the Cleveland public transporation alot. Some people like it some people don't.

Benndaman,

These schools are tremendously different in what they offer in terms of lifestyle. What do you want?

slipper in what ways? As in case is more serious, academic than bucknell?

Case is pretty serious and they are expanding constantly. If you remember they spent millions in the fall to get the debates into town. I know more then a few people that go to Case, they all love it and say the the academics are challenging.

Can't really comment on Bucknell.

bucknell is sweet. Yeah its in the middle of nowhere, lewisburg PA, but there is still lots of stuff to do in that town. The size is perfect, not too small. Great facilities. It has athletics, unlike CW.

Cleveland is a terrible city, but the area around the university is pretty. If you like classical music, Severance Hall is within walking distance, and Cleveland's orchestra is top-notch.

If your focus is medical research or BME then it is a no brainer - Case should be your option. I have been to both schools. Bucknell only accepts 10 students into BME , as it is a new program. Case is ranked #4 in the field. Case has top ranked Cleveland Clinic and University Hospital systems right next door. The kids at both schools seemed geniunely happy with their schools. I had overnights at both. I didn't think Case students seemed unhappy at all.

Case is an urban school, same as any other one. Bucknell is in the middle of nowhere. Transportation to the nearest airport is 1 hour away. Getting there could be tricky without a car or scheduled holiday shuttle from the school.
Bucknell is a beautiful campus, though.

thanks a lot guys
