case western vs tufts

Tufts is more prestigious than Case, is in a part of New England that I absolutely LOVE, and the feeling I've gotten is that it's a pretty fun school, socially. The reason that I would prefer Case over Tufts is that I have lived in an area very near Case, and two of my very best friends (who attend a community college in the area) would be only 15 minutes away, and that Case has some pretty good business programs. However, I've herad that the area around CAse is pretty run down and a little depressing, and that the social scene is not so great.. additionally, CWRU stands for Case Women Are Ugly, and thats definately not a good thing. Academically, I think either school would be good, and that I'd be able to get into a pretty good business graduate school, so im just really stuck over these two.. ugghhh

First of all, taking such a negative attitude towards Case (the "acronym" etc) isn't going to make you any friends if you do come to Case. Speaking as a first-year student at CWRU, I don't really think that Cleveland is all that bad (coming from the Seattle area, it was a colossal switch, both in weather, economy, etc)...the reality, for better or worse, is that a large percentage of studens stay mostly in the University Circle area anways, which, housing the art museum, symphony, etc, is pretty nice. Quite frankly, the business school has been going downhill (at least so far as the rankings tell me, as an Aerospace Engineering major I can't speak from personal experience). As far as prestige is concerned, I've got no worries, Case is well known in the engineering/medical world...I can't comment as to the business programs, perhaps someone in that field could chip in here...

I am not sure what you mean by "prestigious". Where I am coming from (in engeering) no one will think Tufts is more prestigious than Case. As for the business program, neither Tufts nor Case is "prestigious/top-ranked". I don't think girls at Tufts are famous for their beauty either. I guess you just have to pick the one that you are most comfortable with.

Actually, the undergraduate business program at Case was ranked 52nd (just two out of the top 50 they routinely list) and their graduate business program was ranked 43rd this year, while in the same survey was UNRANKED last year...so that doesn't demonstrate a decline at all. I hear their business programs are very good...and it's a small program so you're bound to get a lot of interaction with small classes and good profs.

Personally, I'm choosing between Case and Babson, so quality of business program is an important factor for me too. Earlier today, got another letter from Case. This was sent from their Weatherhead school. Let me quote to you one line from it which should answer the question of their business program's quality:

Our undergraduate business programs are well-regarded---in 2006, they once again ranked in the top 20 in U.S. News & World Report.

gprime is correct. Case is generally ranked around #25 for undergraduate business which makes it higher than Case's engineering school (around #35). Tufts has no undergraduate business degree and engineering there is around #75. But really, choose by fit and feel. Tufts seems more like a LAC. Case is more of a research focus and graduate school. This review of Tufts seems fairly accurate:

Tufts is known for International Relations, Babson for Entrepreneurship.

Wow - there was a false review.

Tufts is much more selective, well-known, and prestigious than CW. We have one of the highest retention rates in the country, and yes - many of our engineering school students were near/at the top of their class. Or they wouldn't be here.
