Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: Good stats and writing wasn’t bad
Where else you are applying or have already applied: UMichigan CoE (Accepted) UChicago(Deferred) Columbia, Cornell, Northwestern RD, waiting on UIUC
General Comments/Advice/Hindsight: Was expecting a deferral bc didn’t show much interest but got a pleasant surprise. Really considering the school since its cheaper than state flagship.

Other

Applied for Financial Aid?: No
State (if domestic applicant): TX
School Type: mid/large public
Ethnicity: Caucasian
Gender: M
Income Bracket: Enough
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): None really

Reflection

Strengths: showed interest (campus visit/tour/interview); good ECs
Weaknesses: ACT math score, no hooks
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: I have no idea. Pretty bummed as it was one of his top choices
Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: Accepted Rose-Hulman; Rejected ED at Rce; Also applied to Georgia Tech, Cornell, Bucknell, Olin

Overall, fairly baffled and saddened by deferrment; Case was one of S’s top 2 choices. Received a generic deferrment stating they wanted to see his current term grades. He has 7 science credits; 6 math credits; 3 STEM credits; 9 AP credits; and three college courses in addition to typical core curriculum. We have encouraged him to choose rigor over easy As, although he basically has all As. so I’m not sure if this is a generic letter or they really question his grades.

Decision: Accepted into business school

    [
] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): Not sure what qualifies as major…

Subjective:

  • [] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Captain of dance team (2 years), President of spirit club, officer of diversity club, representative of student body student council, school representative for marketing purposes, jazz band/wind ensemble/orchestra (saxophone and bass clarinet)

[] Volunteer/Community service: Volunteer at inner city daycare, volunteer counselor at stay-away camp
    [
] Summer Activities: study abroad (Germany, Austria, Italy, France, Britain), volunteer work, science camps
[] Essays: I’d like to believe they were 9-10/10 because writing is my greatest strong suit.
    [
] Teacher Recommendation: Both by English teachers who write very well so I’m confident in them (we aren’t allowed to read them ourselves) I plan on having my AP Bio teacher submit an additional letter.
[] Counselor Rec: So good! She read it to me and I was amazed.
    [
    ] Additional Rec: n/a
[] Interview: Yes, through Skype. Went very well.
    [

    [
    ] Gender: Female

Reflection

  • [] Strengths: Probably my essay and the fact that I’m a black female looking to be an engineer
    [
] Weaknesses: I went to a very challenging high school so my GPA/transcript appears shabby but my school also reports as being a challenging institution so I’m really not sure…
[] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: Probably the subpar grades. Could’ve gotten a higher ACT too if I’d practiced math more. Perhaps if I’d applied for something a bit more liberal, I’d have been accepted.
    [
] Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: Accepted to St. Louis U, Illinois Tech, Iowa State, U of Kansas,
Murray State, Mizzou, and UMKC’s 6-Year M.D program. Waiting on responses from others.

**General Comments: **
Case is my second choice (right after Virginia Tech) so I was a lil bummed and confused to see that I was deferred. Will get in contact with my region’s admission counselor and hope for the best but honestly, if the spring decision comes and says “You’re Denied”, I’ll live ahaha. Case was my stretch school anyhow

Reflection: Reading cc really helped us avoid some possible pitfalls.
Strengths: Strong GPA, EC’s and ACT Score. Showed interest and fit with the school
Weaknesses: Clearly from reading these posts there are a lot of other very strong applicants to this school
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: Quality of application was pretty solid, and It was the top choice and it showed. We looked at a lot of colleges over the past two years, and in CWRU my daughter found the school that fits her personality, intellectual abilities, and academic pursuits.

Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: In the end, after a wonderful time at the October Open House, CWRU was the only school she applied. We thought about changing the application from EA to ED, but by the time our daughter was 100% sure, it was after Nov 1. (She kept getting lots of mail from the Ivies and invitations to some special minority weekends and other events they were holding, but she feels CWRU is a wonderful place and perfect for her. She liked CWRU better than the Ivies she/we did visit.) She is extremely excited!! Deposit is already sent.

When you press “Status Update” on your portal, it will take you to your acceptance letter. At the very bottom of that letter, there is another link that takes you to your FA letter.

Posting an update about my S, who was deferred on the 19th (stats posted above). One the 22nd, he received notification of a status update on his Case account. He received a letter dated 12/22 that he was accepted EA with $22,500 as a University scholar, complete with the personal PS about his essay! I don’t know what happened, but I’m calling it the Christmas miracle! LOL

Wow. I’ve never heard of a change of heart on a deferral come that quickly. (Wonder if they just made a mistake?) In any case, congratulations!
