These all seem like really sucky classes/teachers according to senatecourseguide/ratemyprofessors. I know those aren't always the most reliable sources, but still... it's enough to put me off. What's a good (not too much outside work/not terribly boring) category two to take? Anyone know about Exploring Culture Through Film?

well, in my experience Senate Course Guide at least is a pretty reliable source. as a freshman, i basically took the class that fit my schedule best heh...which was Asian Art History from Antiquity to 1300 with Lee. bleck. one of the most boring classes i'd ever taken, i can say that much.

ugh it sounds boring. sometimes senatecourseguide has starkly contrasting comments, though, so it's hard to know what to disregard and what to take seriously into account.

My friends in that class like it, but they're also film majors. The "films" are documentary pieces. If it's narrative film you prefer, I took Introduction to Contemporary East Asian Film and Culture with Shaoyi Sun. One lecture each week that isn't altogether that important, one movie screened during the second lecture period (some very good, others a little odd) that you write a single space 1-page film review on each week, one midterm exam and a term paper in place of a final.

Asian Art History from Antiquity to 1300 with Lee is boring, but definitely not boring as European art antiquity to 1500 with Howe. (cat I) I actually liked prof. Lee because of prof. Howe. Its fairly easy i would say if u like memorizing.

Theres a new class this semester. It's not on the official course catalouge yet, but im 100% positive it is a category II general ed class (I asked the history department). It is called

HIST 273g Colonial Latin America

It's taught by Maria Martinez, who got pretty good reviews on senatecourseguide. I would say sign up. Almost noone has because noone knows it exists
