"Cats won big (56-0), but exactly what is College of Faith?"

<p>What exactly is the purpose of a college football team that needs to pay something as sketchy as the unaccredited "College of Faith" in order to have an opponent they can actually defeat? I find this appalling.</p>

<p>Davidson was a school I really wanted my kid to apply to, but he had no interest, and now I'm glad. </p>

<p>Can somebody explain how this type of thing jives with Davidson's much-lauded "Honor Code"?</p>

<p>I’ll admit this entire situation was a bit of an embarrassment. However, I think it is ridiculous to portray this as against the Honor Code. Our football team has struggled lately and this was an attempt to boost the team’s spirits, not some sinister attempt to undermine the college sports. Major programs do the same thing by scheduling teams they can easily beat.
While our football team has under-performed on the field, it is impressive academically. It has been ranked first nationally in terms of academic progress. Athletes take a full course load and the same courses as other students, requiring a major academic commitment on top of their sport. I know of several football players who have attended top medical and grad schools. While many schools like Alabama and its ilk discount the academic program received by athletes, Davidson has kept the focus on STUDENT-athletes. Personally, I think it’s fair to play one easy team for a win while maintaining these rigorous standards.</p>
