This is my first post. Does anyone know about the admission process for UM related to your first and second choice colleges?

My D applied to CBS as her first choice and CLA as her second choice. Obviously CBS is more difficult to get in to. How does the process work? If CBS rejects her, do they pass her application to CLA? Does she end up in the back of the line then for that college's review process? If she's on the fence with her stats at CBS, will they hold the application until they see where she fits in based on the other applications received? Or, would they make a decision right away and pass the application to CLA?

My D didn't apply until the end of November. Are others getting notifications yet who applied "later"? My D is still waiting for UMinn and UWisc.

(One thing I've learned from this stressful process is that my son will definitely get his applications in by the first notification deadline.)

D's stats: ACT 27, UWGPA 3.75, 1 honors class, 4 APs, good ECs and recs

I don’t know for sure how they do it because they have changed the admission practices this year. I would be pretty confident in assuming, though, that if you apply late you will be compared with all those they have already admitted. It might have been circumstances out of her control that made her apply late to these schools, but the rap has always been, “apply as soon as the applications become available in August for the best chance”. Especially in the situation that your D is in where her stats are low for her first choice college. The average ACT for CBS is 29.2 and over 75% of the admitted students this year had an ACT of over 27. Hope everything works out for her and for your son, the deadlinefor him should be as soon as the apps show up on the website, not the deadline the college sets.

I think that your daughter has an excellent chance of getting admitted in her first choice. CBS admits approximately 2,000 students. Of those admitted 350-380 accept the application offer.

No, it wasn’t circumstances out of her control - just procrastination and ignorance. I guess we were swayed by the claim (maybe true) that all applications would get equal consideration as long as they were submitted by the final notification/priority period. What we didn’t realize was the stress involved in waiting, the delay in getting housing apps in and the delay in being able to start real planning for the fall. Live and learn I guess. There’s nothing we can really do about it now. The second born will get the benefit of what we learned for the first.

I did make her do everything herself; take ownership of her college apps - which I still think was the right thing to do. However, I couldn’t believe how many parents I heard from later who told me they basically did the applications for their kids to help get them in on time. They didn’t write the essays for them or anything like that but they did the entry of all the basic information - Senior year classes, ECs, service, etc. - so the kids just had to copy and paste their essays and submit.

I wish I would have found this site earlier in the process. I stumbled across it when I was looking for information comparing UM and UW.

Thanks NamesAre4Lames for your positive thoughts. I guess if the average is 29 and based on what I’ve ready on this site, there are a lot of acceptance letters being sent for those with ACT’s much higher than 29 so some of those being accepted have to have less than a 29.

Even if she doesn’t get into CBS, I think her numbers are good enough to get into CLA.

We’ll see. Hopefully sooner, rather than later.
