What is the difference between Biology, Society, and Environment B.A (CLA) and Biology B.S (CBS)? What are the pros and cons of each? If want to get into medical school which major will increase my chances or does it really not matter?
Hi! A B.S in biology is definitely a better degree if you wish to pursue Medicine. A B.S in biology will fulfill many of the required pre-med courses for medical school. With a BA in Biology, you might have to add a few more courses to fulfill those med school requirements. Note, most kids apply to medical school with a BS. However, entering med school with a BA is possible. Hope this helps!
I don’t think it even matters. I am pre-dental with a business major. The truth is you do not need to take a science undergrad major to pursue medicine. All you need it to complete the prerequisites on top of your major which is very manageable. Very many people come into a science major wanting to go to med school and less than a quarter of them actually end up there. There are not a lot of job opportunities for the ones who don’t make it besides lab work. The irony is that people with psychology, humanities, philosophy, musical, etc majors are accepted to medical schools at a higher rate than those who apply with science degrees. All they care about is your overall gpa and science prerequisite gpa. Do something you like and you will be naturally interested and perform better. If you truly love science, then go ahead but they don’t look down other majors at all and some even increase your chances because med school admission officers also want diversity. They don’t want everyone coming in to be a science major with similar experiences. Do a major you like instead of trying to impress because one major won’t impress them over another. Good luck!
