I'm undecided as to whether I should choose a BS or BA in Biology. Do graduate and/or medical schools for UCLA, UCB, etc. just accept BS, or do they also accept BA. In your opinion and experience, which is better for grad and/or med school, Biology BS or BA?

If you’re going to medical school, I would suggest a BA due to the easier prerequisites. A high GPA is a huge factor for schools after your undergrad.

BS. If you’re going to med school, that’s not even a question. The BA was developed as an extension to Biology while the student is focusing on a liberal arts education.

Basically, [you pick the BA if you’re trying to double major in another liberal arts](<a href=“UCSB Biology Undergraduate Program | UC Santa Barbara”>UCSB Biology Undergraduate Program | UC Santa Barbara).

If you try to jump into medical school with a BA in Biology, you just might be laughed at. Not kidding.

A BS focuses mainly on the things you will need to know to get into medical school. A good science and math background. Now, if you’re trying to get into nursing… Maybe UCSB isn’t the right school for you. Other schools have nursing specific programs, while UCSB just has a general Bio degree. That Bio degree is great - nothing’s wrong with it at all - but if you’re trying to, like, focus in nursing, you might want to transfer next year.

I’ve been informed quite the opposite. BA would be looked at as a better well rounded person than that of a BS.

Honestly, if you’re going to medical school, it won’t really matter much as to whether or not you get a BA or a BS. The things that matter most are GPA, MCAT scores, and internships/research experience. You can still do all the prerequisites for med school with both degrees. You can even do them if you’re a French or English major or any major that doesn’t relate to biology at all. The thing is that your path will be easier with a BA. A BS might be more meaningful though.

I seem to sit corrected: [B.A or B.S for medical school? - Yahoo! Answers](<a href=“Yahoo | Mail, Weather, Search, Politics, News, Finance, Sports & Videos”>Yahoo | Mail, Weather, Search, Politics, News, Finance, Sports & Videos)

They’re right. You don’t need a BS to get into Med School. You can choose a BA. My apologies. All that’s required is a certain amount of hours/coursework completed. There are those that say that a BS is more advantageous and others than say a BA is more advantageous. Personally, I’d go the BS route, just to be safe.
