I had to laugh when I happened upon this Flipping 101 house. It’s the kitchen CB nixed!

I could be wrong, but I think the zebra stripe countertops and overly stripey pattern floors are going to be “What were they thinking?” About 6 years from now
I was a victim to it a little ahead of time about 3 yrs ago. I think I put a very subtle light grey zebra counter in the Del Monte house when they first came out with the quartz that mimicked marble
Nice progress! It’s probably easier to stay on schedule when you are not doing major construction, with building permit hurdles. You might get to like this kind of gig…
@coralbrook – no, you’re not wrong. Glad the zebra got nixed.
Yikes on that zebra. It will be the avocado green of this decade. ? Love your elegant and smart choices.
Today we put in a beautiful kitchen backsplash, finished the flooring and baseboards, and selected the paint and cabinet handles. Going a little risky with the cabinet handles in champagne. They actually looked good and the owner wants them bad. But I’m a little leery because we have a stainless sink and a really cute black faucet. Tomorrow the room is getting painted in Toasty Grey. I think it might be too dark but the owner selected it from all the swatches I put up and I sent her photos
You are so talented. I love the bathroom tiles. Best threads on CC.
At least paint and cabinet hardware are easy to change out down the road. Zebra print counters, not as much ; )
Yes, I can quickly change out those cabinet handles if I get one on and it doesn’t work. Seems to work holding one up. It’s not a bright gold, very muted champagne metal. Just as long as they are a standard hole spacing size. Nothing worse than trying to putty up a drilled hole in the front and center of a cabinet door! Been there, done that?
It literally takes hours to meticulously mark the holes in a large kitchen for the handles before drilling, even when using a guide. I go back several times double checking. Sometimes the handle is some strange hole spacing (European metrics) and no corresponding guide holes on any of my guides. Then I have to make my own jig out of cardboard or wood. My carpenter will not do it, takes too much patience and he knows if one hole drilled wrong, we are in big trouble. So, I have to mark the holes so it is my mistake, not his.
@coralbrook – " My carpenter will not do it, takes too much patience and he knows if one hole drilled wrong, we are in big trouble. So, I have to mark the
holes so it is my mistake, not his."
Sorry. But are you telling me your carpenter doesn’t want to measure anything for the cabinets? Or take on responsibility? It’s all on you? If that’s the case all you have is a “driller of holes” not a carpenter. That’s a huge job that should fall in the realm of your carpenter and not you. Just my opinion.
Yes, but there is a long history of the dang cabinet handle holes I prefer to make sure the marked spots are correct. Besides, I have to do something useful. There’s some design decision involved on where I want them placed, depending on cabinet door style and ease of getting hand into handle.
I loaded some new pictures of wall color and cabinet handles
May I have the picture link, please?
Links sent to Mom22039.
cb, everything looks great. The wall color doesn’t seem too dark from the photos; seems neutral with a touch of warmth, which is nice. You’re making it such a lovely space.
I don’t know if any of you were on the gardenweb kitchen forums about a decade ago, but I’ll date myself and admit I was. One of my favorite kitchens was by a poster named shanghaimom. I believe she was a U.S. citizen living in Shanghai and managing her substantial kitchen remodel from abroad.
I googled her name plus the website (absorbed by Houzz a long time ago) and found a few photos of her kitchen, but unfortunately can’t find most of them. I really liked her champagne cabinet pulls despite the presence of stainless fixtures in the kitchen. I ended up choosing her pulls (easy to grab, fairly clean lines, no ends sticking out on which to catch something) and I still love them. But I went for the brushed nickel and still wish I’d gone with a champagne tone!
(Her color was called Burnished Bronze, which may be the current Gilded Bronze.)
But then, I am happy combining different colors of jewelry!
So, for me, the champagne color is just fine.
Wow. Anyone who was installing champagne or gold fixtures 10 years ago was very brave! And ahead of their time. You have to select very carefully or you might end up with the polished brass look or antique brass which are very dated now.
The champagne pull only comes in 3” center which is a small handle for a kitchen. But it’s a small space and it is not a kitchen that is used except for possibly drinking beer and heating cold pizza slices in a microwave?
Oh, right, a completely different situation. And I really did laugh out loud when reading your comment.
Finished!! Cleared out and cleaned up. Boy, it took four moppings to get those floors clean, there was so much dirt on the floors. The coloring of the floor really hid it well. Also, who was the idiot that bought the adorable vanity?? It was a huge effort to get all the construction dust out of all the geometric crevices!!
Loaded some final photos. There is one more thing we are waiting on. There is a custom floating shelf that will be installed above the refrigerator for the microwave, but it hasn’t arrived yet. I added photos. Look carefully at the floor trim pieces and the stair nose. These were purchased at a completely different store, different manufacturer (because Floor and Decor didn’t have any). It’s not the end of the world, they blend in well
We have 2 upcoming projects at the El Cajon Adobe. Currently we are under a Cantilever deck that Was not built properly. Propping it back to level and digging major holes to set posts properly with lots of strong straps and bases/caps
Painter is moving inside next week and we are going to start painting out the ceilings and some oak cabinets.
@coralbrook so does the slob college student with the dog they craps in the house now move into that nice studio? And are there roommates?
Curious how this is all being handled once you start working in the main house.
Interesting you should ask that. It is my understanding that college student and girlfriend (no other roommates in house) will continue to live in main house. The studio is being set up with desks and a couch for study room and a big film editing space. Also, hangout for friends. This is what student said this afternoon.
But, in email transactions over the weekend Stepfather kept asking to put trash compactor in Studio. I said it was a little too late for that, all cabinets installed. But they could pull out trash pullout cabinet in future if they wanted. He said college kid (Senior) was moving into the Studio in the near future and he was worried the kid wouldn’t take out the trash and it would attract bugs. Not sure how the trash compactor helps that situation:). I just stay out of whether kid is moving in there. Right now there are no cooking facilities besides microwave.
For next project, we are focusing on painting out the master bedroom and ceiling as a trial for the rest of the house. Painter can get into Master Bedroom (Not occupied) from a separate entrance. So, that’s where Painter will work in the mornings. But also painting some areas in living and family room areas and the kids are just going to have to live with it I guess. Maybe they’ll be up in the Studio all day doing their online classes.
