My son applied to 8 , was accepted at 7 and deferred at 1 (which was not his favorite)

i applied to 13 colleges. it seems as though many students are still wary of this number, because 13 has the lowest percentage up there.

i'm surprised at how many applied to only one school.
i wouldn't like to let my future rest on only one college option.

i only applied to one because it was my dream school & i knew i had a very high chance of getting in... and i got accepted in january. had i not gotten in, i was planning on spending a year studying abroad and then applying again (maybe to a wider range of schools). i want to be a language major, so the study abroad is very important to me.

risky? maybe. but it worked, and i know that either way it went, i would have been happy. much happier than if i applied to more schools, got rejected at my top choice, went somewhere else, and constantly thought about "what could have been."

however, i bet a large % of the people on the poll who applied to one school applied EA or ED, got accepted, and didn't have to apply anywhere else.

DD1 applied to five, has been accepted to two (both giving merit aid). Still waiting to hear from the other three (probably very little merit aid coming from these).

Rolling admissions schools probably account for some of the one-school-only students. If your top choice has that option, it sure relieves the stress of senior year. By early fall, you can be thinking about housing choices instead of sweating over essays and applications.

D applied to 11. Accepted at five, all with generous merit, waiting on the other six. I thought she was overdoing it until I saw the poll results.

I applied to 9 schools, and so far have heard back from one(accepted). Waiting for eight is tough.

Good luck all.

I applied to nine colleges....all in the top 10 for Engineering.

7 total. 3 safety/2 match/2 reach.

im from the bay area and at first i wanted to apply to a variety of UCs and private east coast schools. i had a list of 12 i was secure on but then the stress of the essays, etc got to me so i decided staying in state was the best choice for me. so i ended up with 5 UCs, stanford, and cornell just for the hell of it.

i applaud people who applied to 10+ schools. i could never have the patience for that.

Quote: "i applaud people who applied to 10+ schools. i could never have the patience for that."

Try applying to music schools + normal schools. It was a 'blast' (both figuratively and literally).

I applied to UCSD after I applied ED to Tufts, but I got into Tufts before the regular decision deadlines passed. So I applied to two schools.

I calculated the average amount of schools per person (assuming that the people who applied to 15 or more just applied to 15) and got 8.088 colleges per person, with 937 people applying to 7578 colleges. I wonder if we could compare this to last years poll. It would be interesting to see if the average is increasing or not.

EDIT:
Ok, I looked at the other thread and calculated the average (again assuming that 10 or more means 10) and got 7.452, with 1177 people applying to 8771 colleges. Its interesting that the average went up this year. I wonder if thats a result of more people using the CommonApp or something else.

I think it's just the lumping of all the 10+ colleges into one group, compared to a group of 15+. Anyhow, a difference of 0.5 is probably less than the percentage error for this data and is probably negligible in that sense.

only 4 colleges

My mom made me apply to 4 of them and my indecisiveness led me to apply to the other 8.

I also mainly applied to 16 schools in all so I could have more options to compare, especially for financial reasons.

I found the entire application process a bit, but not overly stressful, but I found that it actually helped me become more respnsible. Having to keep track of several different items and deadlines is a part of college life, so this was good practice.

So far, I have only encountered such problems as my counselor not getting the necessary forms out to certain colleges and other delayed problems, which is my application list was reduced from 16 to 12.

As of today, I have been accepted into 5 schools, with some partial scholarships, so I am still waiting for the other responses. Hopefully, by April 10th, I will received them all and made my decision by April 20th. Best of luck to everybody else as well!!!

i applied to 16...

I applied to 34, mainly to see what kind of money I could get. My family doesn't qualify for any financial aid. A lot of the applications were free. :)

dyserenity:

a girl at my school applied to 20 private schools last year, paid full application fee to every one, with the theory that by applying to so many schools she would recieve a full ride from at least one of them.

She did, and now she laughs at all the people who, in the interest of saving 400 dollars on a few more applications, spend 40,000 dollars on the cost of education every year.

i applied to 9....
