CC Transfer to Ivy? Possible?

Hi,

Do the Ivy's accept transfers from Community Colleges? Does Harvard? What do you think my chances are?

I had a mediocre highschool transcript (a's and B's) but stellar sports extra curriculars....then I blew off a semester at state college (1.8 GPA)...then I dropped out for nearly 10 years to start successful businesses...

I've recently went back to community college, earned 53 credit hours, and got straight A's...perfect 4.0 took hard classes like Japanese, Economics, International Business etc....

Also my past 10 years work experience has been outstanding (started companies that were later bought out by publicly traded companies...had books published etc).

Should I even try transfering to an Ivy?

Of course, it can't hurt. You've got a stellar record. Look at it this way, if you don't apply you might regret it later on down the line.

Anything is possible! Remember that. : )

It is possible.

Ah, but is it probable?

lol Only the adcom can answer that. All you can do is put your best effort forth and hope for the best. Not that I know the secret to ivy admissions or anything, but, what is ivy admissions really? They are looking for people who are not only passionate and strong academically but stand out from the crowd in terms of their personality and interests. If you can do that, I would say it IS probable.

From a cursory glance at your stats, I think you have an excellent chance (compared to other applicants).

i dont know much about ivy admissions....but i do know that they must be looking for applicants that in some way stand out or that have something uniqie to offer (in addition to good grades and all that stuff) and i would say you definetly have all of that. i can't imagine why they wouldn't want you...

i'd go for it if i were you. you have great stats (as of recent anyways). What would you want to study? and where?

You will get into some excellent schools if you get dinged at Harvard. It's definately worth a try. I'm not sure that with a 5% acceptance rate and a very strong pool to chose from H transfer admissions are probable for anyone. But you have a much better shot than most.

No. Don't waste your time. Although, some Ivy's have become aggressive in recruiting students from disadvantaged backgrounds and giving full schollarships, they like to get young and mold 'em in their own image. Your accomplisments and efforts will be better appreciated elsewhere.

Okay, first off don't listen to FloridaToNYC, because I can definitely vouch for the fact that a CC transfer can end up at an Ivy. In fact, I know a couple that ended up at larger Ivies (Penn, Columbia.)

Seconded. FloridaToNYC's post is utter rubbish.

I think you should try and apply. You would bring a unique perspective to the campus.

That, and imagine the faces of your fellow upper-div classmates when you tell them, "Not only will I have a BA from Ivy League University, but I paid half of what you did in the process!!"

Just keep a camera handy when their faces contort into whatever hilariously piteous emotion inevitably overcomes them.

Harvard and Yale, from what I have heard, like students with a 'story to tell'. I think you can propound a compelling case.

Wow, thanks everyone for your input, that's exactly what I was looking for.

Hi there...

First of all, you're basically in.

Aside from that though... what are your academic goals? For some reason, after reading your stats., my intuition tells me you're after an MBA program eventually?

Basically in? That's awfully optimistic, isn't it? I was under the impression that it's basically a crap shoot even among the highest qualified applicants...? Coming from a Community College, I would think, would move me to the bottom of the list...don't you think?

MBA? Good guess but no, I'm already pretty well rounded and grounded with my business skills/experience... I'd like to go to Law School, though not to become a lawyer....I find that it's getting harder and harder to operate at the upper levels in business without a very thorough understanding of the law...

Though I will say that I've looked into some Joint MBA/Law degrees (think Northwestern) but they seem more geared towards business and less towards law....when I need it to be the other way around :-)

But anyway....

No one is 'basically in'. It is bewildering how one could state that with respect to Ivy League schools.

CCtoIvy: Varsev is being sanguine.
