CC transfer to NYU or JHU?

Hey CC,

I am currently a 2nd year California Community College student interested in applying to NYU (also JHU). I will have 60 credits completed by the end of this spring term. I want to know if I am a "competitive" applicant, or whether I would be wasting my time (and admissions time) by applying.

Here are my stats:

Major: Art History (History of Art at JHU)
College GPA:4.0
High School GPA: 2.7*
EC's: -Volunteered at a museum for 6 months,
-Interned at an antique gallery/shop for a year
-Interned at a local library for 8 months
-Helped start an Art History club at my college (and have been a member for 1.5 years)
-Make sack lunches for homeless people (at a charitable organization) for 2 hours every week for 3 years

-I will also get a good letter of rec. from an Art History teacher at my CC (who offered without me even asking)
- I will have the prereqs required for my major (by UC's) done by the end of the spring semester.
- DID not take ACT or SAT, but they are not required for admissions.

*The things most bothersome to me are the fact that I am applying from a CC and that my High school GPA is not very high --- I battled with severe depression for several years, but I pulled it together and got all A's in my Sr. year of High School. Is high school GPA very important to JHU or NYU ( I know for many schools, when transferring after being at a college for a year it is not)?

Do CC students get in to these schools? Should I bother applying? am I competitive? Thanks in advance!

You should be competitive for NYU, not sure for JHU. Either way, you should apply for UC’s as safety.

Are you ready to pay the 60K/yr COA for NYU or JHU?

As artloversplus says, NYU is very expensive. I’m also a 2nd year CC student in California (business major). I was going to apply to NYU, but once I find out how expensive it is, and how little it is, I realized it would be impossible for me to go there. On the other hand, I’m determined on going out of state. If cost is an important factor, you have to look for schools that offer good financial aid for out of state, transfer students.

Some that come to mind are UNCCH, USC (in state, but private so tuition is same for everyone), and Cornell (based on what I’ve heard).

First off, congrats on your vast improvement! A 2.7 to a 4.0 is totally awesome, so lots of praises to you. It’s really awesome to hear that you’re an Art History major because that’s a recent discovery of mine that I am interested in pursuing. I know NYU’s program is really good, but let’s face it - the price tag of that school is a total turn-off. But I think you have a great chance at getting in, so I wouldn’t fret too much about that. I’ve heard of JHU’s program, but I’m not too sure so I would rather not guess what your chances are.

I’m a transfer student, too, applying for Art History and Communication programs at schools particularly in California (i’m from a university on the east coast). If you have the prerqs and requirements, definitely check out UC schools like UCLA and Berkeley. I think you have a great chance at those if you write a terrific essay. Also look into USC. I just applied there and its AH department is supposedly very, very good.
