Am I a Competitive Application to NYU or JHU from CC?

Hey CC,

I am currently a 2nd year California Community College student interested in applying to NYU (also JHU). I will have 60 credits completed by the end of this spring term. I want to know if I am a "competitive" applicant, or whether I would be wasting my time (and admissions time) by applying.

Here are my stats:

Major: Art History (History of Art at JHU)
College GPA:4.0
High School GPA: 2.7*
EC's: -Volunteered at a museum for 6 months,
-Interned at an antique gallery/shop for a year
-Interned at a local library for 8 months
-Helped start an Art History club at my college (and have been a member for 1.5 years)
-Make sack lunches for homeless people (at a charitable organization) for 2 hours every week for 3 years

-I will also get a good letter of rec. from an Art History teacher at my CC (who offered without me even asking)
- I will have the prereqs required for my major (by UC's) done by the end of the spring semester.
- DID not take ACT or SAT, but they are not required for admissions.

*The things most bothersome to me are the fact that I am applying from a CC and that my High school GPA is not very high --- I battled with severe depression for several years, but I pulled it together and got all A's in my Sr. year of High School. Is high school GPA very important to JHU or NYU ( I know for many schools, when transferring after being at a college for a year it is not)?

Do CC students get in to these schools? Should I bother applying? am I competitive? Thanks in advance!

For better advice about transferring, visit the Transfer Forum. Read through the sticky threads at the top for good information and links.

Yes, top CC students transfer into your target universities every year. Your GPA puts you in the range, but as always, this isn’t an easy thing to predict. Make an appointment with the transfer counselor at your CC and get some help with making your complete list, and putting together your applications. If your transfer counselor has no experience with these universities, ask if they can put you in contact with a colleague at another CCC who has.

Good luck!
