I'm an incoming sophomore at a northern California community college and I'm eligible for the TAG program, which I intend to use to apply to UC San Diego. However, I would like to apply to Berkeley as well (I'm aware they don't participate in the TAG program) via regular transfer admissions. My intended major is Political Science with a focus on International Relations (I'm considering applying to a couple of private schools as well for the IR major).

My current stats...

College GPA: 3.7
High School GPA: 3.2
SAT Scores: (May 2010) 1800, (November 2010) 1840
Extracurricular activities:
- two unpaid internships at the California State Capitol (with the California State Assembly) in the Summers of 2009 and 2010.
- participated in Track & Field in high school for one season...
- part of my high schools Political Forum Club throughout its three-year existence, including being an elected officer.
- part of the Young Democrats Club at my high school.
- volunteered on several local political campaigns in high school.
- currently participating in a paid college internship with the California State Assembly via the Assembly Rules Committee (started May 2012, tentative end in November 2012). Responsibilities include staffing two resolutions through the legislative process, briefing my Assembly Member in two committees she sits on (Education and Insurance), and interacting with other staffers, lobbyists and advocates.
- I was chosen to participate in a political leadership conference for Hispanic high school students in 2010, which stressed the importance of political activism and community leadership, and included several workshops such as a mock legislative session at the California State Capitol.
- I am going to be part of the International Life club at my community college, which promotes campus diversity in international backgrounds of students.

If my current academic streak continues, I will have a 3.8 GPA by this December, and completed my state capitol internship. Do my current and prospective credentials make me a viable candidate for transfer for to UC Berkeley for Fall 2013?

Any help is appreciated for a curious college student!

UCs do not include freshman stats and SAT/AP test scores for admissions evaluation. They will only judge you on your CC coursework. Any idea what your GPA after Fall will be? Because that’s the one that they use to evaluate you. I’d say your a strong applicant for all schools. Are these the only two UCs that you’re applying to?

Assuming my grades keep at the pace they’ve been, I should have a 3.8 after Fall 2012. And I’m not sure if I should apply to any other UCs, but I am considering several private schools as well.

You should be good for UCSD; as for cal, just work up a good personal essay and you’ll have a shot

@VladimirLenin: I’m not trying to impress anyone, though I would appreciate if you could elaborate on what you believe are my shortcomings? Like I said, I appreciate any insights.

The high school stats were just comparisons to my college stats, I’m well aware that they will hardly matter in transfer admissions. But I do understand what you mean by people maybe thinking I am “showing off” by posting those stats… I’ll keep that in mind.

I am Latino, though in CA I’m not sure if that counts as URM?

There will be no place on the application to list your high school stats on the application. They only evaluate applicants on their college work.

You will have a great shot at all schools with a 3.8. If you get that GPA, I’d say that you should be accepted to all schools assuming that your pre-reqs and IGETC will be done. Well, it depends, would you want to go to other UCs, or are Berkeley and UCSD the only two you’d consider attending?

Quick question.

For TAG when exactly do you apply for TAG??? Do you it during Fall or Spring when you get 30 units??

If it’s for Fall, and I don’t think I have enough units by then, can I take summer classes and would they count for TAG???

Also, what is the difference between TAG and TAP???

^You submit it sometime in September (you have to submit it by September 30th). If you took classes in the preceding Summer, then yes they absolutely count as a part of the 30 units needed (AP test credit doesn’t though).

TAP is a program that UCLA has for CCC students who will complete the Honors Program by the end of the Spring before they transfer. It gives the “priority”, and most importantly, allows them to be evaluated for a non-impacted alternate major (if you are not TAP certified, your alternate for UCLA will be ignored).

Berkeley has a TAP program too, but it is by invitation only. I don’t much about it.

So basically you apply for TAG the same time you apply for UCs. right?

Btw
How hard do you think it’ll be to get into UCSB as a Business/Econ major???

Also on IGETC, it says we need a foreign language, what if I already took 2 years of foreign language in high school???

No, you apply for TAG in September in a separate application. You apply for normal admission (you have to it even if you’re approved for TAG) in November, which is different and includes an essay section.

2 years of high school language will satisfy that IGETC section, but remember that your CCC (not the UC) certifies IGETC. So look through all of their requirements and make sure that the classes you have taken will satisfy it (especially if you want to use courses from a different college). You don’t want to check off the IGETC on your apps, only to find out later that you won’t have (you may be rescinded).

Your chances depend on your stats. If you qualify for TAG and submit the application for it without any mistakes (only if you actually qualify), you’re guaranteed admission. But if you’re missing any requirements you will not be granted TAG, no exceptions.

you have a very good shot at Berkeley! update us on how it goes!
