I just found out I got a 76 first semester in Ap Calc BC. I love Columbia, but I am crushed. Be honest, should I even consider/visit/apply to Columbia? Btw 2240+ SAT, 12 AP classes by graduation, ~3.75 GPA, decent ECs. Is it time to reevaluate?

I would be realistic about your chances, but you won’t know unless you try! It’s definitely a stretch, but you might regret it later if you don’t apply. You still have a shot! =)

Thanks. Although I just realized my gpa would be more like a 3.7

Definitely apply. It might hurt your chances but your course rigor, GPA and SAT make you competitive – apply, what do you have to lose (besides $80 :P)?

Thanks this makes me feel a little better. Would ED increase my chances even if my gpa would be lower because it wouldn’t include 1st semester senior grades?

^ Apply ED if it’s your dream school. Columbia says that there is no advantage to ED (besides knowing earlier), but the jury is still out.

Why wouldn’t you apply

Ok. eee, I thought I had absolutely no chance. Does it also help if my intended major has nothing to do with Calc (international relations)?

SIPA program is a totally different thing… You apply your junior year in college for that.

You’d declare another major in the mean time.

I am talking about for applying next year, not sipa

There is no IR major at Columbia College, closest thing is SIPA.

IR is also a focus available through the PoliSci major.

A 3.7 GPA and 2240 SAT certainly won’t automatically disqualify you from Columbia, so you should apply. But remember that over 90% of applicants are rejected, so don’t hold your breath.
