I’m a junior in a tiny Quebec private high-school hoping to attend NYU Stern in the future. I don’t have an impressive list of ECs as well as no AP/Honours programs since my school doesn’t offer them.
I’m planning on making up for this in CEGEP. (The CEGEP I’m attending offers a lot of clubs and athletic teams)
Would my chances be affected if I have no APs as well as my ECs being only in CEGEP? On the other hand, do American colleges even see your CEGEP transcript?
Any insight is appreciated, thanks!
US colleges will require all of your transcripts. Are your parents able to pay US$70,000/year for NYU since they give minimal financial aid to Americans, let alone international students.
My parents are able to finance me. Does this help in the application process since Stern is need-aware for internationals. Do most internationals need financial aid?
Thanks
If you do not ask for financial aid as a freshman at a need aware school you are usually unable to apply for it in later years.
I don’t need financial aid though.
Have you looked into Desautels and Rotman? They’re both very good programs and much cheaper than NYU too, especially if you’re a Canadian citizen.
If your school doesn’t provide APs and doesn’t have many ECs, then NYU will take that into consideration when reviewing your app.
Although I don’t know much about business, I feel like I would go to a Canadian uni over NYU, mainly considering cost. If you really want to attend school in the US, you could look for schools that tend to give more financial aid to internationals.
Sorry for late response.
I did take a look at a few Canadian business undergrads but I’m aiming for a job in the US so I’m hoping to get into a school like Stern, Ross or Berkeley. I’m hoping to eventually get a job on Wall Street.
Hi, I’m assuming that your school does not offer AP, IB or any equivalent advanced college-level courses, and that’s fine! Colleges understand that high schools offer different programs to their students, so as long as you’re taking the hardest courses being offered with high marks, you shouldn’t be at too much of a disadvantage, if any.
And as stated before, colleges will request transcripts from all institutions you attend. Additionally, it probably isn’t harmful that all of your EC’s come from the same spot as long as they’re varied yet still provide a broader picture of an overall interest in business, since that’s always an advantage when applying to top business schools. Good luck!
Why don’t you do undergrad in Canada, and business / graduate school in the US?
If you are planning on an MBA, figure 4 years undergrad plus 2 for the MBA in the US would be $420,000 US ($570,000 Canadian) at today’s prices, probably a bit more by the time that you are done. A bachelor’s in Canada plus MBA in the US looks closer to $200,000 US. That would leave you with a lot of your own money to invest with your recently acquired business and finance skills.
@DadTwoGirls and others questioning his school choice due to financial problems:
Just as for many other majors, many large firms such as investment banks recruit at specific schools very heavily, and not so much (or not at all) at other schools. His decision to study in America is more than likely solely for the purpose of landing a higher-paying job post-undergrad, which will allow him to get into a more prestigious MBA program after several years in the workforce (and therefore get an even higher-paying job post-grad).
Whether or not that is worth it in the long-term is up to his own motivation to work hard, but he did say that money is not a problem for him.
