I’m wondering about everyone’s experience with cell phone reception on the UA campus. I use T- Mobile, and while we’ve found it to be spotty when we travel west of the Mississippi the coverage seemed fine during our time in Tuscaloosa. We are considering switching carriers, however, and I’d like to know what works & doesn’t work on campus.

We have Sprint and never encountered an issue during our visit to Tuscaloosa with phone reception, texting, or e-mail/Internet access on our Blackberries.

Roommate has/had T-Mobile and expressed only okay service in Tuscaloosa and spotty roaming throughout Mississippi. My home in WA is west of the Mississippi and T-Mobile gets great service, but I don’t think that’s a valid comparison (T-Mobile USA is based there).

I’d say the most popular carrier in Tuscaloosa is AT&T (people love their IPhones), but Tuscaloosa only got 3G this fall and service during football games can be delayed. I’ve seen times when people wouldn’t get a text for up to 2 hours, but AT&T is working to increase capacity during games.

Personally, I and a lot of others have Verizon. We get full 3G (max bars) throughout campus and much of Alabama and don’t have the system overloads described above AFAIK.

Really, every carrier works in Tuscaloosa, it’s just a personal preference. If you don’t have it already, unlimited texting is a good idea. Most of the time we text each other rather than making voice calls.

I have visited UA multiple times and have had great service with Verizon throughout the campus.

I have Tmobile and I haven’t had any problem with 3G reception.

Ditto. Verizon.

From my experience and those I’ve talked too, Verizon is by far the best on campus. Especially on football game weekends. AT&T is a UA sponsor but many iphones are rendered useless inside Bryant Denny on a fall Saturday. I’ve never had a problem sending or receiving messages/calls using Verizon.

Thanks all! Sea_Tide, yes we have unlimited texting. We added it after receiving the bill when D got her first cell phone. Exactly how it is possible to send 1200 texts in a month I’ll never understand, lol.
We always lose T-mobile service in Arkansas, and when we drove to the Grand canyon it was spotty much of the way. Sounds like it will serve in Tuscaloosa, though. Perhaps we’ll wait before making any changes.

I do not beleive we had any problems with our T mobile service on our vist in Janurary. In fact we were surprised as we have trouble in Long island but not Tuscaloosa.

I have an AT&T phone; AT&T service used to be terrible for the first few weeks of last semester, but new 3G towers were installed, and coverage’s been excellent since.

Oh, and to echo NJBama and SEATide, my phone is rather useless in Bryant-Denny on game days.
