Cell Phone Service at UVA

Hi, I was just accepted to UVA yesterday, and I am very excited to be a wahoo! I visited UVA last year and stayed overnight in the Alderman dorms. I remember having horrible service in the dorm room and student lounge. I am from Northern VA and have no problem with my current cell phone service (Virgin Mobile). I will most likely be switching cell phone carriers since I’m not on a contract because having good service (for calling and connecting to the internet) will be very important!

For any students (especially 1st years) or their parents, I would appreciate it if you would list your cell phone provider and how good/bad your service is/was. I might be getting T-mobile, so if anyone is able to provide feedback about T-mobile that would be even better!

Congratulations!!! Our son lived in Gooch last year and Lambeth this year and has never had any trouble with coverage with AT&T. But, for some reason he has trouble with his phone calling home with much frequency!

D has Verizon and never had trouble in the old dorms. By the way she loved them, do if you end up there don’t stress. Location is great and you only wish you had AC for about two weeks.

DD had had Verizon (never an issue) and T-Mobile (pretty bad everywhere on/near Grounds). TMob is much cheaper but Verizon signal was much better for her. We may have to switch back.

10 years with AT&T…but making calls from dorms isn’t something I do.

Our D had major trouble with AT&T reception in the freshman McCormick Rd. dorms, and mediocre to bad service in Lambeth. We switched to T-Mobile when she moved near the corner, and coverage with them was not good either. I know from experience that my mother has Verizon and often gets a good signal in places that we did not when we had ATT. Too bad they are double the price of T-Mobile.

U.Va recommends using a phone with a plan from Verizon, AT&T, or T-Mobile, all of which have boosted cell coverage on Grounds:

That being said, I have always had excellent reception with Verizon everywhere on Grounds, including first-year dorms, JPJ, hilly practice fields, and even in basements. If you’re interested in what other things U.Va recommends you bring for moving in to dorms, check out this FAQ:

Good luck!

OP, my daughter (a third year) has Virgin Mobile and doesn’t have problems contacting friends or us.She is in the Hereford complex this year. She texts and calls.
