Cell Phone Service

This really isn't like the other posts, but which cell phone providers work in Williamstown. Currently I have Cingular, but some people have told me that it doesn't work up there. I have a two year contract with them, and don't really want to pay the fee to break the contract, will Cingular be ok?

I was wondering that myself. I just got a T-Mobile phone and they had trouble finding a network up there. I'm in the same situation. I'm not breaking that contract.

Sorry to tell you this, but T-Mobile is pretty much unusable up here in Williamstown. When I first visited, I noticed that I got NO service anywhere on campus. If they've installed more towers and opened up more coverage, then great, but I don't know anyone here who uses T-Mobile. Most students use Verizon or Sprint.

Cingular works fine.

Verizon works pretty well.

Both verizon and sprint work great @ Williams.

Yes...I have sprint!

OK people this would be a good time to think more expansively. Do not choose your college based on like how many bars your cell phone gets there.

For those who are really serious about this line of thinking and are not from rich families: If you are going to decide your future based on your cell phone plan (this makes me smile/cringe) then at least go to one of the other need blind admissions colleges (see wikipedia for a partial list). Otherwise it's like phew you save $200, go to NYU with great cell phone service and pay $10,000 extra a year in tuition. Hm.

Why not just go to your preferred college and resolve to become the CEO of Motorola? Your first act would be to secure crystal-clear reception in places like the Purple Valley (notwithstanding the fact that most people go to the Berkshires for vacation to ditch their cell phone and be free) and pay yourself back the two hundred bucks you lost back in '07.

I don't think people are going to base where they go to college on the cell phone reception, they probably just want to know in advance which service works best in advance so they have ample time to switch before they get there.

T-mobile definitely does NOT work = (

tour guide said verizon is best

VZW has best coverage in the Northeast generally, too, so it's a good bet for the area.

I'm not choosing a college based on how many bars my cell phone gets. I AM going to Williams this Fall and needed to know if my phone would work up there.

when I visited, I saw verizon pay phones. I got service everywhere with verizon, even though driving up the mountains, I had absolutely nothing. So I'd say verizon's pretty safe.

Cingular is pretty good. I have it. Go 40 miles out of Willy and you lose service but thats ok cause most of the time you don't go out that far too often.

Yeah I have Sprint and when I was driving up the mountains I had absolutely no service.
