Are there any cell phone providers whose service is markedly better, or worse than the others in the area?

I have Cingular and it works well. I'm pretty sure they have a tower on campus, and that students get better rates. From what I've heard, T-Mobile is pretty bad throughout parts of the Richmond west end. I don't know anything about Verizon's coverage.

The University has a relationship with Cingular and has a tower on campus. Here's the info if you choose to arrange a phone through us (which you do NOT have to do). Lots of people also have Verizon and seem happy with that. I have a colleague who is going to send a random sample of students this question and I'll let you know what they say about it.

IS - Telecommunications

As a current student, Cingular's the best on campus, but Verizon is pretty good - I get at least one bar almost everywhere, which is all you really need. Sometimes I even get one bar when Cingular has none, like in basements and such. I have no idea about others though

As everyone has said, Cingular is the best because there is a tower on campus. I have Verizon, and it's fine when I'm outside or in some buildings, but I get very shoddy reception in my dorm, which means long phone calls to the parents out in the cold... It does seem to vary. My roommate who also has Verizon gets decent service in her room. I don't.

verizon with a cell booster never let me down, always have one bar in dorms, but stuff always works
