Yes this is pretty trivial but which carriers get the best service around campus? I'm thinking about cingular or verizon and wanted to check.

i don't know about any of the other carriers, but i've been getting really good service with AT&T (which, of course, is essentially the same as cingular at this point). the only place i consistently don't get a signal is in CCL, but that might be... erm... because it's underground. i don't really see how anyone could get a good signal in a library that's under a ton of dirt and concrete :-P

but yes. AT&T/cingular seems to be pretty good, though i'm sure there are other service providers that also get really good service on campus.

Verizon works well for me.

Tmobile is fine

What about Sprint? It seemed spotty when we visited the campus. Anyone know if that is common?

When you guys got to campus, did you bring your phones from home (assuming you're not from CT) or did you sign up for a Verizon or Cingular or whatever plan in New Haven? We're dealing with this right now, because if I brought my Seattle phone number to Yale wouldn't any people who wanted to call me from local land lines have to pay long distance (because they would be dialing my 206 Seattle area code)? How does this work, do most people sign up for new phone plans in New Haven?

We got my son's phone before he left. We have Cingular. We have a 3 phone family plan with 1250 minutes, free nights and weekends, nights start at 7pm and free mobile-to-mobile. He calls his friends who are from all over and we've never gone over minutes. I know from looking at the phone bill that most everyone has out of state numbers and seem to bring their phones from home

He has no problem with reception as far as getting a good signal, but to hear him clearly some times - well, that's a whole other story and it's not due to Cingular - there's always something going on where he is , whether it be a strong winter wind blowing or him being in a music room - at those times I just tell me to call me when he gets to a quiet place!;)

remmiak - i'd plan on bringing your seattle phone number to yale with you, but sign up for a long-distance or national plan before you do. i'm from the west coast, so i faced this same problem last year, and i've discovered that almost all of my friends kept their old phone numbers too. this means that i'm regularly calling area codes in arizona, massachussetts, new york, etc. and it really wouldn't have done me much good to get a phone based in new haven.

plus, this way, i get absolutely free calls to my parents. which can be really nice when i get stressed out during finals week... :-P
