Cellphone Issues?

Hi all, I just had a question about changing or finding a good cellphone plan for college.
My situation is a little weird, because I'm seriously considering attending McGill (assuming I get in.) Do I really have to pay those insane roaming fees, or is there a better way to reconcile my cellphone needs with the location of my (future) college?
(I was thinking of having my parents contact me using Skype or something, since they'd be the ones contacting me most often from the States, and getting a Canadian plan, can someone evaluate this?)
If I don't go to McGill, I might be going to an area where my current cellphone company has notoriously bad service. Should I switch carriers, or is this a non-issue?

Just switch carriers to someone with a good international plan and use that. Problem solved.

Are you going to visit the school? Take your phone with you if you visit the college and see how your reception is. If it’s good, keep it. If it’s not good, switch it. I think Verizon has decent coverage everywhere.

I did visit McGill, my carrier didn’t even operate in Canada. :(

Look into getting Skype. They have an unlimited US+Canada plan for $2.95 a month.
