Century Scholar

Not quite sure what this is all about. The letter says "You will receive a monetary award as well as a number of distinction opportunities as a Rice student, including a close relationship with a faculty mentor and a share in one of the mentor's ongoing research projects." Since it says "including" it seems like there is more to it than the money and the research opportunity, anyone have any idea? And also, anyone know about how many people get this award (or get this award and matriculate) every year?

They are a bunch of century scholars, but it's still a great award. You can get a better idea of how many at Owl Weekend since there is usually a special Century Scholars Dinner. Some of the things you get in addition to the research opp and money are: free tickets to the Houston Ballet's Nutcracker, Free tickets to an astros game and a couple fancy lunches/dinners each year. But the money and the research position are the biggies.
Have you checked out the program's website?

I think the program is really cool. It's nice to be able to have an independent project and be able to build that kind of relationship with a prof. If you have any more questions about it, let me know!

so is every century scholar guaranteed research? since there's so many, what if theres not that many faculty proposals per year?

and does anyone have any idea how many ppl get the award?

Yeah, you are guaranteed research. They have enough proposals because i think generally a lot of the same profs do it each year. Plus some of them take multiple students.
