hello, I am about to enter college as a business major in a well regarded business school. I’ve never tried AP comp sci/ don’t believe i have too much interest in coding and things of the sort (but I’ve never tried it). I keep hearing that coding, programming, IT skills, etc are going to be necessary skills for marketing / finance/ consulting etc majors to possess. will I be ok if I don’t minor in comp sci or anything of the sort? do you recommend I take a few intro classes at least in comp sci? will it be in a marketing major’s best interest to have these skills if they might be aiming for a marketing analyst job as their first job out of college?
Get to college, talk to professors and career services about what skills you will need in your field and go from there.
Knowing technical languages is very helpful particularly if you are looking into management or marketing, less so for finance (unless it’s a startup) or you’re looking to recruit within a bulge bracket tech division. It’s not a requirement yet at entry level positions but it is really an invaluable skill and can make a big difference in candidacy. I wouldn’t say you have to minor in it, as you could learn a good amount through online courses such as Coursera.
