Hello, im not yet in college, but will eventually most likely be attending UW-Madison or UMN. I am very interested in marketing and would love to get a degree in it, but i feel like i should pair it with another degree to be more useful. I have no experiance with computer science, but it seems to be a very good major. I am good at math and science, but what is the most useful major to pair with marketing if i want to eventually work in silicon valley? thanks
It is way too early to worry about it. You will take a bunch of intro classes in different disciplines as part of the business core so you will get a taste of different avenues you can pursue. Take some classes and see where your interests and aptitudes lie. Typically you don’t declare a major/minor until the end of sophomore year.
I would definitely pick up statistics and learn some computer science on the side or as a minor. Statistics, predictive analytics, and big data are highly in demand within marketing now. Learning Hadoop, SQL, Python, etc will help monumentally with recruiting.
The only advice that I have is to pick UMN. UW is undergoing massive budget cuts at the moment, and as a result, the quality is sliding. On the other hand, UMN’s budget is being increased. This may not seem like a big deal to you if you’re not in college yet, but it ends up impacting your education greatly.
