chairs?

are we allowed to bring in our own chairs into the dorms?

They don't allow most outside furniture, but I've heard people say they bought an extra chair for entertaining (as long as it isn't like...a recliner...i think it will be okay).

From what I've heard, no outside furniture will be allowed this year. Regular room checks will be held to make sure that extraneous furniture is not there. In my rooms you won't have space for extra chairs anyway.

i mean, what if we don't like the chairs provided for us? :(

The chairs provided are actually pretty comfortable, they rock a little bit so you can lean back a little.

Does this include a bean bag chair, or a beach chair that folds up and fits into a small bag, i was thinking of bringing one, it has a cup holder in it.

If anything you can have friends sit on your bed

on the housing website, it says a bookshelf is ok--- but this is outside furniture, so....

i'm sure fold up chairs (like the ones you take to sit in at outdoor events) are perfectly fine...as long as they are folded up when you're not using them...assuming that, like matth said, nyu is going to be uber strict on furniture rules this year

so what about bookshelves?

You have space on top of your desk for books, think about it, 4 classes, and textbooks that you would probably sell used. nobody i know bought bookshelves in college

We're allowed small bookshelves, so I'm buying one when I get out there. I'm a leisure reader, not to mention a Dramatic Lit major, so I'll be bringing a lot of my books with me (including numerous plays).

lastaccntbanned - not all the desks do. whereas i believe the desks in hayden and other dorms have several shelves above the main desk part, ive seen pictures of goddard dorms of desks that dont have any shelving above, or just one.

im buying a small bookshelf (or two, if theyll fit) when i get there myself.

as for chairs...yeah it says you cant bring any. if you dont like what's provided, maybe you can buy a seat cover or something? i dont know. im thinking about maybe getting an inflatable chair or two just for having people over to watch tv perhaps? theyd be good for if you dont think youll need extra chairs often, but you might just now and then.

lastaccntbanned-- yea i'm in hayden and i'm pretty sure the desks have shelves attached to them, enough to fit my textbooks and stuff. however, i read a lot so i want to be able to have my novels with me.

so when they say small bookshelves-- they mean of any kind, just as long as its small, so the density doesnt matter? like what if its wooden, for example and its heavy, BUT its small? also would you guys buy it there and then assemble it in your room, or how does it work?

Density likely won't matter. But it's probably a bad idea to lug around something that's small but heavy, to be used as one of your small bookshelves. I just don't see the logic in that. Wouldn't it be a hassle to carry move around?

bookshelves: im probably going to try to get one that's foldable. the container store has a lot of those, i know:

http://www.containerstore.com/browse/index.jhtml?CATID=77229

scrapnel-- those are nice. however, i know that the container store tends to be very pricey, do you know of similar bookshelves for a lot less?

mmm i dont know of any other folding ones, sorry
