Chance a fellow MN resident for CLA?

I've been accepted to my back up schools, but I am still anxious to see whether I will be accepted or not to UMN. As I am all of us have seen the stats, I am just looking for a chance that fits my specific circumstance.

I am in state and I go to a well-considered public high school. On the naviance acceptance scatter-chart everyone (I'd say as an estimate) the standard deviation of people (68%) are wait-listed and eventually accepted. Nothing except raw GPA/ACT is in the chart. The others in the region are either accepted or permanently wait listed.

I have a 27 composite ACT: 31 English, 26 Math 26 Reading, 25 Science

My GPA is a 3.34 unweighted. I take many IB SL and IB HL classes, this senior year, I'm taking only IB classes.

I made it aware that I took part in volunteering/church, a couple extracurriculars, etc. And I emphasized how I have worked part-time at a grocery store since freshman year, working up to 30 hrs during the school week.

In the special circumstances area I really made my case. I earned a 3.2 and 2.8 approximately during my freshman & sophomore year. I said it was because of mild depression/anxiety and medication. Then I said that at the end of sophomore year I quit medication in pursuit of a better lifestyle (there is more background I won't go into). Junior year I took a ton of IB classes and knocked it out of the park with a 3.85uw, with A's in IB HL classes, joined student council, and became a spokesperson for anti-student bullying, started an extreme sports club, and became more socially involved overall.

But do you think the admissions officers will buy into this? Will I have a better chance of being accepted, rather than being wait listed? That is what I'm hoping. Thanks for your input.

I can’t say as I’m really an expert, but I think you’ll get some serious consideration for the challenges that you’ve faced. Pair those with evidence that you’ve made significant progress in terms of coping with depression and anxiety, and I think you stand a pretty good chance at getting in. Hopefully responses will pick up a little bit after the 15th.

Good luck!

@cttrpllrcnvy‌ you were very smart to make your case in the personal statement section and the trend is obviously positive under the additional pressure of rigorous coursework - the admissions committee must love that. My D’s high school counselor explained to us that a turnaround story can be a very good aspect of an application. Your ACT is pretty much at the average for CLA so that shouldn’t keep you out. And you have a great story with a great ending for the GPA (and presumably for any deficiencies in class rank, assuming your high school does rank). Not sure when you applied but it’s certainly possible that your application will take a more thorough review given your circumstances. I wouldn’t read much more into any delay at this point.

You might ask your high school counselor if he/she can write a letter on your behalf - the high school counselor told us that the admissions people do take those into account as well. Good luck - you have a lot going for you on that application!!
