Chance a girl with MULTIPLE F's on her transcript.

Yeah, you heard me. Don’t judge me.

But anywho, Junior year is now over and I’m basically figuring out where I have to apply/where I’ll get in.

I have quite a list of colleges, so please chance me for as many as you know.

First, my credentials:

White Girl from Michigan
GPA Unweighted: 2.88 (Freshman year bad, sophomore good, junior okayish)
GPA Weighted: 2.97
Feb. 7th ACT: 29
Apr. 4th ACT: 27 (10 writing)
Rank: 51st Percentile
4-5 Years of all core subjects, including Spanish
Lots of Honors and AP Classes. Took several AP Exams. Will have 9 AP’s upon graduation.

About the F’s: My freshman math teacher switched me onto the Power-Track (my school’s math sequence for the smart kids) starting sophomore year, and I immediately began failing EVERYTHING in math. I was working really hard and I spent many of my nights awake completely bawling into my pillow, no lie. I failed 2/3 trimesters of power-track geometry, made them up in remedial and got B’s. The administrators insisted that I just “Wasn’t a geometry person,” so they kept me on the power-track into Algebra 2. Power-Track Algebra 2 has a reputation of being super brutal, and it definitely was! I failed power-track Algebra 2 in it’s entirety (again, excessive crying and stress), but I was only able to make up the first trimester of it. So therefore I’ll have 2 F’s on my transcript. I also have a few D’s scattered throughout the years and a C or 2. But mostly B’s and some A’s.

-I’m captain of the dance team, cross country team, and track team.
-I’ve been to two psychology summer camps over the last 2 years.
-I am in a statewrite youth writers association
-I have a job and work 30 hours every week.
-I have starred in one play and one musical at school
-I am on my class committee
-I am in Mock Trial
-I am in Environmental Club
-I play the Viola in the highest up oprchestra
-I am running for senior senate
-I did chemistry work with my dad over the summer in his lab
-I have 3 poems and one story published
-I was in an Aquafina Commercial

-I know I can get atleast one good rec

-My essays will hopefully be quite good.

Here are my schools:

Universty of Rhode Island

Indiana University-Bloomington

The Ohio State University-Columbus

University of Minnesota-Twin Cities

University of Illinois-Urbana

University of Maine

Minnesota State University-Mankato

UC-Berkeley

Purdue University

UNC-Wilmington

Iowa State Univertsity

So, please, if you know of any of these, please chance mee.

Thanks guys!

Is money an issue? The OOS publics probably won’t give you much aid. I’m not familiar with most of these, but honestly, you’d be wasting your money applying to Berkeley which has a 4.2 average GPA and average ACT over 30.

My best guess:

Universty of Rhode Island: Yes

Indiana University-Bloomington: Yes

The Ohio State University-Columbus: Maybe/Yes

University of Minnesota-Twin Cities: Maybe

University of Illinois-Urbana: Maybe/Probably Not

University of Maine: Probably/Yes

Minnesota State University-Mankato: Yes/Safety

UC-Berkeley: No way No way

Purdue University: Probably

UNC-Wilmington: No way No way

Iowa State Univertsity: No way No way

yeah all seems fine except berkely. in my school, you wouldn’t graduate due to your 2 Fs

Universty of Rhode Island- Take the SAT and score equivalent to your ACT and youll have a better chance here. Its not a real reach even with the low GPa, their average is a 3.1, so you’re fine there. so Ill go with Match

Indiana University-Bloomington- far reach (http://colleges..com/colleges/admissions/indiana_university-bloomington/151351.aspx) thats why. still if you can present something outstanding about yourself to counteract the GPA.

The Ohio State University-Columbus- This also seems to be a high reach to a negative, sorry.

University of Minnesota-Twin Cities- Negative unless you’re Native American or strongly hispanic. then they offer a remedial program where it takes five years to graduate. but this school ahs goten increasingly competitive in the last two years. They have a 56% acceptance rate and average GPA of 3.6, as well as you’re ACT score sits on the 75% composite.

University of Illinois-Urbana- This one unfortunately is a far reach on all gears.

University of Maine- definite Match. the only problem is financial aid, as well as other things. but your GPA isnt too far below the belt here, you just have to appeal to them showing that you’re a good student.

Minnesota State University-Mankato- Definite Match. not a bad school either.

UC-Berkeley- no chance here.

Purdue University- no chance here

UNC-Wilmington- your test scores are in range here, but unfortunately, your GPA doesnt match and unless you have something that stands out to them its a negative here. their average is a 3.7 GPA.

Iowa State Univertsity- I love this place, because it is a really good school for the sciences that is more relaxed about admissions standards. The education here is what you make of it, but it is very good. They will undoubtedly accept you, especially if you’re in state.

Chance back if you feel like it…if not. doesnt matter

ForSkakenOne, thanks for the downer.

I don’t think they’re basically all reaches for me like you said.

And a lot of people think I’m going to get into IU. And your link doesn’t work.

I seriously don’t want to go to community college. Omggg.

Yeah, at my school you’d probably have to make up classes like crazy for those F’s.

Im not familiar with the other schools, but UCBerkeley and probably UIllinois are no ways. Sorry!

I know people usually would rather go directly to 4 year colleges, but going to community college is not bad or anything. ^

You will be wasting your money at Berkeley since you’re OOS.

If I were an admissions officer I’d be :X about your academic ability. Strong AP scores would help, as would strong SAT scores (reasoning math section and math subject test) in particular

Can you tell us about your GPA for just soph and junior? Keep your upward trend going :)

You will get into Mankato State but not the University of Minnesota. That’s all I can really tell you. I had a friend this year with a 30 and a 3.65 and not bad EC’s get rejected from the UMN.

I apologize if its a downer. the truth of all this is that none of us on here are admissions specialists, and even with all the research I’ve done into some of these schools, it ends up ebing a complete facade, as their is no real trend to admittance into most of theses schools. so honestly, don’t take it seriously what Im saying, Im basing these off of the middle 50% admitted. Keep your chin up, you’re going to college, and none of the schools on your list can be considered bad. Either way your college education becomes whatever you make of it. you can always transfer later as well. Its my honest belief that these web sites are not healthy for people, as it possibly defers them from schools of their choice when they possibly couldve gotten in. So dont get down over it.

oh wow…

RonPaul, I’m no longer going to apply to the University of Minnesota. Sad.

You know what?

If that STUPID teacher in 9th grade didn’t MAKE me go on that STUPID Power-Track, I would have had A’s and B’s in math and likely much higher grades in other classes.

I went through countless nights without sleep trying to figure out stupid power-track math, and even more nights compulsively bawling and wishing I were dead because I felt worthless.
I stayed after school 3-4 times a week, sometmes for HOURS with my power-track algebra 2 teacher for help, but she failed to help at all. All she did was tell me my grade and give me 5664765 practice problems that I couldn’t do, and then when I asked her for help she yelled at me and told me to go home because she was busy with other students.
Then, I’d go home and cry, and then spend hours with the stupid Power-Track book trying really really hard to understand the problems. Then my dad ould try to help and he’d lose patience and tell me that I should really just change myself. Wow that helps a lot, dad. I kept telling myself that I had the power and strength to figure it out on my own, but I kept letting myself down. 3rd trimester, my highest test score was 33%.
Then I’d feel sad and loseall my enthuisiasm for my other classes.
And ths all happened almsot every day.

I never ONCE had an incomplete homework assignment. i stayed after a LOT. And what did the teacher comment on the report card? “Lack of Effort.” Go figure.

Plain and simple, I worked my ****ing ass off. And what did I get in return? F’s. And lots of them.

Why the #^%* did god make this happen to me? I could be going to some amazing college like Indiana or UC-Berkeley, but nooooo, because allll this crap had to happen. OMG.

I’m like so mad right now.

And I’m ranting, my apologies. ='[

Nothing is wrong with going to community college. My mom’s friend’s daughter (and also a good friend of mine) moved here from China three years ago. She graduated from high school, went to a local community college for two years and got all her premed credits out of the way, and then transferred to Berkeley. She is glad and does not regret what she has done because community college was a whole lot easier (she got a 4.0. But if you went to a university you would have to take humanities and all that “crap” and it would be a whole lot harder) It really doesn’t matter where you get your credits from (they’re all college credits), you can still transfer and get a insert university diploma. :D

fairydreams, you clearly didnt see post #7.

I WILL NOT, under ANY circumstaces, tolerate going to a community college. I’m DEAD SERIOUS. So people, please stop suggesting it.

I’m a LOT smarter than my GPA, and I really need to find a way to make that come through…

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/1062593023-post9.html

why did you even bother putting Berkeley on there…are you trying to insult Cal?

Just shut up, okay? Like I said, I TRIED.

Geeze.

So much for having big goals

Fiona, these are my individual GPA’s:

Freshman Tri 1 GPA: 3.4
Freshman Tri 2 GPA: 2.1
Freshman Tri 3 GPA: 2.6

Soph tri 1: 3.6
Soph tri 2: 2.8
Soph tri 4: 4.0

Jun tri 1: 1.6
Jun tri 2: 2.9
Jun tri 3: 3.01

Hey chill out. I was just trying to help.
And YES I DID see post #7. However, you just said “omgggg i seriously don’t want to go to community college”. It did not come across as a extremely negative comment to me, so I decided to give you a little personal anecdote in case you wanted to reconsider. And as far as I can tell, I’m the only one (besides another person who just said community college wasn’t bad) that even mentioned community college. No one is forcing you to go, it’s ultimately your choice. We’re just here to give you options and unbiased advice. I only mentioned community college because I don’t want to see you spend four years at a college you absolutely hate and feel like you don’t deserve. You said that you are smarter than your GPA (and I don’t doubt it), but admission officers have NO way of knowing that. However, if you got a 4.0 at a local college, then Berkeley admission officers would recognize your intelligence. But since you’re apparently dead set against a community college, my only piece of advice would be to write AMAZING essays. However, this alone will not prove that you are smart. Even if you try to talk about being put on the “power-track math”. Colleges will most likely not take kindly to it, because they will think that “power-track” is not THAT much different from regular (hey, geometry will be geometry. same goes for algebra) and if you fail “power-track” it probably meant that math was never your forte anyway. You can mostly likely get into some of the colleges on your list though, so don’t worry. I understand that you’re totally stressed, but hey, don’t kill the messenger.
EDIT: It’d be great if you could post your AP scores and SAT scores up.
