Final Chances: For a Girl with F's in Math.

Heyyy everyone. I think I figured out what colleges I'm going to apply to, and I'd like to be chanced for my final list. I know I may not have the best chances at top schools, but I'm really determined and I'm a go-getter shooting for the stars.

So please.. give it a shot?

White Girl from Michigan
GPA Unweighted: 2.88 (Freshman year bad, sophomore good, junior okayish)
GPA Weighted: 2.97
Feb. 7th ACT: 29
Apr. 4th ACT: 27 (10 writing)
Rank: 51st Percentile
4-5 Years of all core subjects, including Spanish
Lots of Honors and AP Classes. Took several AP Exams. Will have 9 AP's upon graduation.

About the F's: My freshman math teacher switched me onto the Power-Track (my school's math sequence for the smart kids) starting sophomore year, and I immediately began failing EVERYTHING in math. I was working really hard and I spent many of my nights awake completely bawling into my pillow, no lie. I failed 2/3 trimesters of power-track geometry, made them up in remedial and got B's. The administrators insisted that I just "Wasn't a geometry person," so they kept me on the power-track into Algebra 2. Bad Idea on their part. I failed power-track Algebra 2 in it's entirety (again, excessive crying and stress), but I was only able to make up the first trimester of it. So therefore I'll POSSIBLE have 2 F's on my transcript, assuming the remedial re-takes for algebra 2 don't replace my power-track grades. I also have a few D's scattered throughout the years and a C or 2. But mostly B's and some A's.

So basically, I am a kid that works really hard and still ends up with D's and F's.

have you thought about going to community college or anything? or DeVry or ITT Tech?

^^I don’t want to go to a community college or a tech school.

But thanks for the reply, althought i didnt make me happy…

DeVry? You kidding me?

I hate to answer a question with a question but,
2.88? you kidding me?

Well gosh, sorryyy.

Do people actually think I’m ■■■■■■■■ because my GPA is so low? Because I’m really not…

I have to say your chances are pretty bad for all of them. I’m sorry, but do apply to see what happens. Look at some other colleges to apply as well.

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/748439-asian-subpar-stats-3-a.html

Nicole, there’s a mentality on this website that if your GPA is under 3.5 and your ACT score is under 30, that you don’t belong in college and that you are summoned to community college/the streets.

I think you have a lot of potential. First off, you got a 29 on the ACT. That means that you definately know your stuff, and that you have a higher knowledge base of high school material than 90% of the kids in the country. You should be REALLY proud of that score.

Also, you showed will power and dedication by taking all the hard classes. Even if you didn’t get all A’s and B’s in them, you still tried and that’s what’s important to colleges: They want people who wont cut corners and take the easy way out.

You EC’s are really good. Captain of THREE sports? You’re clearly a great leader and you obviously have a high level of dedication. You also work a lot… which is bad for many reasons, such as keeping you away from homework, but it means tha you’re mature and have experience in the workfield.

Now… I don’t like to sugar coat things, so I’ll just say it: the GPA/Rank aren’t that impressive. You’re in the top half and you’re a B- student, which is totally okay, but a lot of colleges these days are expecting more. Obviously math isn’t your thing, and if that’s why your GPA is so low, they might take into consideration how well you did in everythng else… which could offset your poor performance in math.

So anyways, chances:

University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign: Probably not going to happen, but definitely apply if it’s your first choice. You never know unless you apply.

James Madison University: Very possible. 50% chance.

Arizona State University: I think you’re in. I don’t know much about it.

Valparaiso University: Sorry, don’t know

IUPUI: Don’t know, sorry

Ohio University: You should get in! Middle 50% for ACT is 23-26, and rank is 55th-85th. This is actually a really nice school.

Michigan State University: Low Match

Arkansas State University: I kind of agree with previous poster… why would you want to go there? No idea though.

University of Minnesota-Twin Cities: They’re random. You have a shot.

University of Southern California: Go for it. They might like your essays. And your ACT is in range and the EC’s are good. It could happen.

Good luck… I hope you get into atleast a few of these places.

Yeah, I agree with ^. I think UIUC and USC are pretty unlikely, but overall, your list is not bad. I definitely see you getting into at least some of those schools.

seems like we’re forgetting that she actually scored LOWER her second chance. What happened?

don’t get her hopes up…

africanprince, no one’s laughing.

She doesn’t need to send her second ACT, and her ECs are pretty good. Why are you trying to attack any form of confidence she has left?

Theres no need to be a dick, africanprince. And remember that people who live in glass houses shouldn’t throw bricks.

Her test scores are better than yours, and her EC’s are A LOT better than yours. Maybe you’re bitter because you found out that you have no chance at the only school you’re applying to, but don’t take it out on everyone else.

Nicole: I can’t accurately judge your chances at these colleges, nor can most of the rest of the people here. I suggest you talk to your GC, and perhaps explain your situation to the adcoms at some of the colleges you’re looking at, and see what they think.

that was from 2 years ago… you haven’t the slightest clue who I am or where I am at right now, Mr. 3.25 GPA. Bottom line: You Just Don’t Know. Get this corny **** out of here.

so you’re saying she’s worthless? looks like we can agree on something.

THE PRINCE HAS SPOKEN.

Um, pretty sure you had a 3.2 too…

I’ve always wondered what happens when you click “Report Problem Post”…

africanprince: You making fun of this poor girl for having a 2.88 is exponentially more pathetic than having a 2.88 in the first place. What’s even sadder is that you do this while your credentials aren’t even in the same league as Nicole’s. My guess is that you didn’t end up at the college you aspired to and feel the need to take the wind out of others’ sails.

Nicole: Yes, UIUC and USC are tough schools to get into, but it sounds like you’re the type of student who sincerely wants to be there. Make sure the adcoms know that and they’ll have a very tough time saying no to you.

^ I agree. I bet you could really shine in your application essays and any interviews you do. If you can convey your sense of hard work, effort, and your improvement and situation, then I’m sure you’ll do fine. Good luck!

have you even looked at her previous threads and her unwarranted arrogance?

get a grip, son. you just don’t know.

University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign - no.

James Madison University - probably.

Arizona State University - yes.

Valparaiso University - idk.

IUPUI - idk.

Ohio University - yes/probably.

Michigan State University - maybe.

Arkansas State University - yes.

University of Minnesota-Twin Cities - maybe?

University of Southern California - no.

just my opinion.

i don’t remember if i posted in one of your other threads a while ago, but i 100% sympathize with your math struggles. i’m pretty awful at math too, and this past year (junior for me) i struggled a lot in algebra II and got some low quarter grades (c’s, d’s). i managed a b, but it was really embarrassing and stressful that i struggled in a basic regular class while my other classes were AP/GT. it completely brought down my confidence and as a result my grades in my other classes dropped as well. if i found out i did poorly on a math test one day, i would be too distracted by how badly i was doing to focus in other classes. basically… you’re probably a smart person, and you’ll be fine – don’t let math get to you too much.

Thanks so much everyone who actually chanced me/said something meaningful.

Good luck.

I wouldn’t pay attention to any of the ■■■■■■ around here. Just apply wherever you want and make sure you have at least one safety school. What’s meant to be is meant to be, and the ■■■■■■ here on CC aren’t the ones that determine where you’ll end up.

Good luck. :)
