Chance a guitarist for Yale.

Hi guys. I hope you find me unique. My scores are not the best, but I am hoping that the rest of my application will make up for it.

UW GPA: 3.83 (2 B's in BC Calc and Honors Physics- hardest classes at my school, were among the highest grades in those classes)
W GPA: 4.7
Rank: Top 1-2%
Courseload: Hardest possible courses at my school. Have taken music theory and music psychology classes at Yale College during the school-year. One of the teachers was my mentor.
School Type: Competitive Public. Sends about 10 or so out of 400 kids to Ivies each year, lots more go to Top 25 schools.
Location: CT
SAT I: 2350
SAT II: MII 800, Phys 750 (taking Physics again, expecting higher, taking USH)

Prospective Major: Cognitive Science and Music

Extra-Curriculars-

Fencing-
Founder/captain of fencing team. Take lessons from a coach at Yale, hopefully will be competing more. Not a GREAT fencer, since I started late (11th and 12th), but I really enjoy it and hope to continue in college.

Guitar-
Paid position in a selective statewide jazz band, play across the state and northeast. In school jazz band and pit crew for various plays in and out of school (my school is well known for its plays). Perform regularly at school events. Taking flamenco lessons for about 4 years, recording an album over the summer with my flamenco/jazz band. Hopefully I'll be able to send something to Yale (I am in contact with their guitar teacher- have attended a few master sessions).

In a band with some friends- play across the state (I sing and play guitar). We play "indie" music and have been featured on statewide news and newspapers. We just released a CD through a contract with a recording studio. I have organized several charity shows and I have helped out/performed in/done sound crew for a specific charity show hosted by a recording studio that I've been affiliated with since I was about 12. President of school's guitar club- organize shows to raise money and get famous musicians to come in and talk to school.

Research-
Prestigious medical internship at Yale currently. Working with Pathology and Neurobiology professors. In the past, my work has been on music cognition- for three years I researched music's effect on the brain. I could not continue studies this summer because my mentor is away. In the past, I have gotten awards from many statewide and national science fairs. This year I got a LOT of recognition for my music cognition project. I was asked to present at a symposium at Stanford University. I am very involved with the people at Yale who research this.

Music Therapy-
200+ hours. Work at Yale Hospital (children's department), Yale Oncology Unit (through a program called Hole in the Wall), and at the Institute for Music and Neurological Function in NYC (senior citizens). Helping put together Music Has Power ceremony this year. The organization (including myself...for a brief second) was featured on a PBS special.

Environmental Club-
Co-president since 10th grade. Helped put together a website to raise awareness. We were asked to present at a huge conference and were given a leadership award.

School Newspaper-
News writer. I'm not THAT involved, so no leadership position (should I still mention?).

Film-
Made some movies, entered festivals, got some awards. It's more of an interest than an extra-curricular. I love watching movies and its a big part of my life too. I hope to pursue some of this in college, maybe taking a few film classes. Should I mention this too?

Member of Tri-M (music honor society), starting Mu Alpha Theta next year with a previous math teacher and some friends, and member of NHS.

Awards: Science awards from school blahblah, Brown Book Award, LOTS of awards for research, some awards for music and fencing

Essays: One will be about my passion for music. I truly believe that it can help people feel better, which is why I researched it so much. I also was able to see, first-hand, how it can change the mood of a person (even someone who is dying).

Recommendations: Good. One from science research teacher who I have had for 4 years, one from AP English teacher who I've known personally. Might send a rec from some music/psych people at Yale that I have done research with- they have expressed interest in co-writing a single recommendation.

Will probably send a music supplement.

Legacy: Mother went to Yale

Race: Nepalese, US Citizen. I have lived all around the world though (countries in Asia, Europe, South America). Moved to US in 8th grade.

Interview: I generally interview well. My dad is friends with a lady who interviews for Yale in NYC. I'm meeting with her soon for some tips on what to expect and how to do well.

Financial Aid?: No. High income bracket.

Basically....I know I have a lot of reaches. My jr year was tough because I took REALLY hard classes. I ended up getting two B's, but I hope that doesn't take me out of the running. My GPA is a bit low, yes, but my SATs are good, I think, and my SAT2s will get better because I am studying really hard for them this summer. My ECs will help too, as I hope they can convey the passion I have for music. I am very involved with Yale University, and I really really feel like it is where I belong. The people that have been in my classes at Yale are all so interesting and artistic- I feel like I'd fit in. Any input?

you have great ECs, great scores, etc. Two B’s won’t kill you, so great chances at all, but of course Yale is a reach (although you probably have better chances than most there.) Good luck!

Wow. You definitely have an interesting profile. I think you have a good shot at yale scea, probably better than most. You have a lot of reaches on your list, as those schools are reaches for everyone, but you definitely have a great shot. Good luck!

Your profile is almost too good to be true. You’re a Yale legacy with top scores, great ECs, and only a couple of Bs. You have very good chances, and you certainly don’t need to apply to 18 schools.

Oh…my…god…
Such strong music focus and passion, in conjunction with top academics…you certainly blow me out of the water lol.

That your mother went to Yale is the key here. You have good grades and stats, but most unhooked with your profile get rejected. You, however, have a golden ticket in your legacy. Excellent chance.

Wow. Good shot!

Everything looks beyond great. I think you have one of the best chances at Yale because you’re passionate about what you want to do. And your stats aren’t that bad either! I’m super duper impressed. The legacy part will actually help you a lot as well.
Good luck!

I wish I was you.

is this a joke? if you DIDN’T get in to Yale with all of that, it would just be wrong. Yale should have been competing to get you to go there and not somewhere else!

I totally agree with musician2, you’ve got a really strong application. Your GPA is good and your EC’s are to die for. :(

Would you please look at my chances?

amazing… you HAVE to get in haha

please chance back if you can  http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1225356-compsci-schools-students-bad-stats-like-me-uc-chancers-please-look.html</a></p>

You’re in.

Legacy makes it a probable admit.
