Subjective Stuff:
ECs: Okay...kinda long list here, so I'll break it up.

Music- Music is probably my biggest passion. It is what I do outside of school mainly. In school, I am in the Jazz band and I take music theory (going to take AP Music Theory next year too). Anyway, the list:

School Jazz Band- Guitar

Yale Jazz Ensemble- Guitar (I play with them a lot, my guitar teacher and the Yale band conducter are really good friends and I've gotten to know him quite well. I play many shows with them and go to rehearsals.)

Guitar Lessons- 7 years

National Guitar Workshop (summer camp for qualified Guitarists)

Classical Guitar in Regional Orchestra

Volunteer to play for Local Church

In Jazz/Experimental Ensemble with Friends- Guitar/Sitar (Kind of a side hobby...We've won a lot of awards for this band. We've been showcased in the local newspaper and in the New Haven newspaper)

In a Progressive Band with Friends- Guitar (My BIGGEST hobby. We write music and play lots of shows. We've gotten a record deal from a fairly well know international label and been showcased in my CT newspapers, websites, and television shows. We've won many awards including many local Battle of the Bands competitions. Just recently, our music was put on a compilation album in NY and we were flown over there to record it. We've opened up for and played with many famous musicians such as Steve Vai, John McLaughlin, Joe Satriani, and Dick Dale.)

Been studying Indian classical music for 4 years

Played sitar for various shows and Indian dancers

Wrote/Performed the entire score for a movie that I am making. (see below)

Academic- I'm associated with various academic extracurriculars as well. Besides music, my biggest interest is probably in medical/biological science.

Math Team- Captain
Science Club- Founder/President
NHS- President
Student Government- President
School Newspaper
Science Research Program- I have conducted a lot of research and my work has been published in a few well-known journals. I have gotten help from many Yale professors with my work and I've used their labs.
Abroad Science Study- Gone to Bermuda with a few members of my school (had to be selected by grades/essay) to study marine biology.
Science Mentorship- Tutor younger students in Science.
Have participated in:
CT Science Fair- Won first prize in soph. year. In Freshman year I recieved a medal.
CT Junior Science and Humanities Symposium- Same thing as Science Fair. Wow, my Soph. year research was good, huh?
BrainDance Awards- A competition for brain-related sciences. Did pretty well.
Science Olympiad- Captain
Job at Pharmaceutical Lab- My father works at a pharmaceutical lab and I helped them conduct research and design their website.
Taken a Neurology course at Columbia over the summer

Sports
Ultimate Frisbee- 4 years (captain)
Cross Country/Track- 3 years (my CC coach happens to be the brother of the Yale track coach..he'll definitely put in a good word for me)
Kung Fu- 7 years (I've participated in many tournaments and I have won quite a few awards. A really fun sport. Try it some time)

As you can see...I'm not much of a sports person. =) Its just something I do to relax once in a while. AND as you can see, I'm very very VERY busy.

Volunteer Work:
Key Notes (we play shows to raise money for homeless/poor)- 50 hours
Yale Hospital- 200 hours (there go my summers =( )
Asha for Education- 150 hours (I started a CT chapter near my house. Asha for Education is an organization where we try to break the poverty cycle in India and raise money to build schools. My chapter has raised a lot of money for schools, and this summer I went to India to help build one of the schools. I'm currently filming a documentary with the help of my Video Production teacher on the poverty cycle in India to raise awareness. I've just got to edit the footage and I'm set. Like I said before, I scored all of the music. I plan on sending it to Sundance by next year and perhaps show it on several local channels.)

If you're still reading this..god bless you. =)

Anyway, besides all that, I have a legacy at Yale. My mother went to Yale and so did my cousin (it wont really help me, but what the heck). While my cousin went to Yale, he lived in my house.

I'm also a really good writer. I've won several awards for my essays and poems (including a lot of cash!..which my parents forced me to put in my college fund), so I think that my essay will be pretty good as well.

So, what do you think are my chances?

You look very good on paper. Good luck!

Thanks, bro! Anyone else?

Agreed, you look pretty good on paper. Just keep in mind that Yale has thousands of applicants who look great on paper, and it thus remains something of a crapshoot for any college of Yale's caliber. Where else are you applying?

I don't quite know yet, Yale is my top choice. Maybe Princeton? Where else do you think I should apply?

i think ur as close to in as one can possibly say given that ur a legacy with amazing stats/ecs. nice job in high school so far.

I thought you said you were a freshman in the chances board...

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?p=3134886#post3134886

so are you a freshmen or junior?

this smells fishy...

Compared to you, I'm just waiting for a rejection letter.

But seriously, you look great. Can't hurt to try right?

And quick question....on a lot of applicants I always see "research done"
I've gone to a typical high school in central florida about 1500 kids with only about 3 APs to offer, and I was wondering how does one go about "research". You know what I'm saying? Like do I just walk into my chem class and start mixing things up? I mean of course not, and I don't mean to sound ignorant, but seriously, how do you do it?

Usually, a lot of kids I know who've done well in research competitions attend math/science magnet schools where there are plenty of internship opportunities through local universities and labs nearby willing to allow high school students to work on various projects. You can try contacting local labs, medical centers or research institutes. If you live in a small town without research centers like me, you might want to think about commuting to research labs outside your town. You can also try applying to some summer research training programs; the Garcia Program at SUNY Stony Brook is particularly good, PROMYS is great if you're a math person and of course, RSI. If you're interested in doing research in math or informatics, you can do that on your own computer..just find a mentor. BTW, the vast majority of applicants to Yale and even to more science/math oriented schools like MIT/ Caltech have not even done research in high school.

Extremely fishy. If true, I would be surprised if you didn't get in.

If the OP is true... then great.
If not, he had too much time on his hands and had nothing better to do.

Yea, this can't seem true just by looking at his AP's. He says he took AP Lit. his sophomore year, something that I've NEVER heard of anyone do. Furthermore, he listed AP's he's taking NEXT YEAR. What about this year? And I've never heard of a junior being president of that many things. Maybe a senior.

And if the OP is telling the truth, then why is he posting all that here? That profile would be in almost automatically. It's completely flawless, he has a passion, extremely well-rounded, science research, way good test scores, volunteer out the rear end, legacy, knows infinity people at Yale, and is Nepalese. It's TOO perfect.

it kills me to know i'll be competing with you for a seat at yale next year....lol

Wait, how can you have a 5 on the AP Spanish exam when you're taking AP Spanish NEXT year? Hmmm.

Thanks for the reply about the research!

:)

good luck

i'd say you have a great shot. my ap world teacher is really good friends with the admissions officer at yale and he says that yale looks at how well you do in the most rigorous courses (aps) and the extracurriculars that make you different from the john q. public. you've got both. good luck!

y wud u even ask? do u really think other people even come close to all that? seriously lols
