haha wowie go smoke a blunt. True ivy league intelligence right there.

Wow. Delontewest, just wow. Really? Really? All anyone on this board can pick on is my grammar and test scores.

Delontewest, you’re right. I actually think you are of ivy league intelligence. You’re greatest “dig” at me is that I forgot a verb in a sentence. You’re reasoning skills are unparalleled by others.

Damn. Your grammar is really horrendous. I know some people struggle with English, but it is really, really is hard for me to take you seriously when you repeatedly write with contraction, idiomatic, and subject-verb agreement errors all the while arguing for ivy-level intellectual competency. C’mon man. I bet you could handle the ivy curriculum, but this grammar is grade level stuff…

Quick lesson: You’re greatest “dig” at me is that I forgot a verb in a sentence. You’re reasoning skills are unparalleled by others.

You’re means “You are” so effectively you just said: You are greatest "dig at me is that I forgot a verb in a sentence.

“Your” is possessive and is also the case that should have been used.

C’mon man. I just can’t take you seriously. (You seem like a nice guy though.)

//I just want to say, Black people were not even “equal” (just a euphemism for a more deplorable status…) until about 45 years ago. That’s not even a blink of the eye. To act as if the remnants of more than 500 years of slavery and oppression are gone is absurd.//

Um, that may be true…but that does not mean affirm action necessarily solves the problem. b/c it doesn’t. society will never be free of racism if race does not cease to be a factor.

Dear Lord. Just stop.
First of all, the point of Affirmative Action is to end Affirmative Action. The Ivy Leagues and other top tier schools are definitely accepting people who are not as qualified as some “White” applicants. Is it fair? Of course not. Race should not give an applicant “bonus points” on their application.
Please, act like educated people, be respectful, and do not nitpick the stupid stuff. Get over yourselves.
=]

Once again, how many times can you make a concession before it is accepted? All you seem to be able to “nitpick” is my grammar. I would like to add “You’re” is one of the biggest commonly used contractions. I actually had an entire discussion with my brother on how it’s annoying seeing businesses with signs up with “You’re” when they mean “your”. But of course, on a forum board when one is typing in a stream of consciousness, it is important to nitpick grammar to prove one’s non-existent point. Obviously, you knew I meant your and it wasn’t that “horrendous” of an error to comprehend the overall meaning.

I am a female and I’m sure I could easily out-debate you in real life. Oh yeah, I was a prosecuting lawyer for two years on the Mock Trial team… but wait that is somehow overshadowed by the fact I’m a minority.

I give up. It seems the original point of my thread has been completely lost. This isn’t an affirmative action debate.

Okay, this should not be an Affirmative Action debate.
Let me chance you at the Ivy League schools.
You won’t get in, sorry. Your stats are too low. Heck, if you get in, then I should have applied to the Ivy Leagues because my stats are better than yours! I didn’t apply because I knew I didn’t stand a chance at being accepted!
Try applying to some lower schools, like William and Mary, UVA, or UMich.
Good luck and stop being a brat.

Ivy’s are all reaches, some UC’s are probably even low reaches and the rest are mostly matches.

Sorry, but I’ve seen URM’s with far better credentials get declined from those top tier schools. If I were you, I would’ve applied to less reaches and more matches.

Brown, Northeastern, Dartmouth - Maybe
H,Y,Penn - Doubt it
The rest - 4/6

Good luck, avoid the haters.

Beowulf- you can’t take someone seriously because their GRAMMAR is not flawless? You can read what this girl writes and tell she sounds like a coheret person who is trying to have an intelligent conversation, which everyone on this thread appears to be impeding. Grammar is a skill that can be learned, but it also takes some inherent talent. I know plenty of amazingly smart people- lawyers and doctors and hell, people with Ph.Ds in ENGLISH- who try hard with their grammar, but need some extra help with it. It’s not like this girl can’t formulate a sentence.

andy- I really doubt she is trying to prove she’s Native American just to get into colleges. Have you ever considered it might be because she is trying to find out more about her past and ethnicity? Plenty of people are curious about these things.

psilove- Wow, “stop being a brat”? HOW WAS SHE A BRAT? the only reason she included her ethnicities here is whether you agree or not, THEY AFFECT HER CHANCE AND SHE WANTS TO KNOW HER CHANCE! Okay? And for the record, EVERY SINGLE MINORITY I know with her stats got into at least one Ivy League school. So guess what? She’s probably getting into most, if not all, of those schools.

Sorry I didn’t chance, but some things people are saying are just plain irrational. It was bothering me, so I had to reply. How is there any way to prove who worked harder across a message board? Nobody knows anybody in person here. What a stupid argument.

Wowie, I hope you get into all of those schools. You did present yourself well, all the people trying to one up you just sound idiotic. I don’t care how high their SATs are, they sound like ignorant fools. Good luck.

Look. I’m not saying you’re not a bright girl. We both know you are. But the fact of the matter is that I didn’t even have those Princeton review classes and I still managed to get a 2180 on the SAT! I self studied as well, while having to listen to my parents talking about my dad’s window business. My parents are very very blue collar. Education has never been their forte. So naturally they just wanted the “bare minimum” of me. You know, pass all my classes, get a high school diploma (never mind college). Hell, if I don’t go into the same field as my father, my father wants me to go to trade school for carpentry!

So please don’t say you’re underprivileged because of your race. So many nationalities have passed through the borders of the United States and still managed to succeed in one way or another without the help of affirmative action.

Just think of the Chinese, of how they were building railroads in the west. Paid near nothing. Abused and made fun of by both whites and their fellow co-workers (African Americans). I know this how? I have read recollections of Chinese railroad workers translated journals (I enjoy history more than I do math).

With this in mind, African Americans are most definitely not underprivileged as compared to the Chinese railroad workers. Despite of their hardships (between the mockery they received from both whites and blacks) and from their slave-like treatment, they still managed to be some of the most successful people on Earth. Hell, America is in debt to China =P. - They did all this with no affirmative action.

Once again, an SAT in the 1800s or a 28 ACT isn’t something that someone should judge you for “Ivy league worthiness”. It should be your overall extracurricular in addition to grades and test scores. But the fact is, even though you might have incredible extra curricular, there will always be people who have just as amazing and unique extra curricular as you, and also with much higher STATS (GPA, SAT, APs etc etc).

…So it boils down to this in the admission officer’s eyes. Your attributes are the same as the other applicant. You have flavor and amusement in your college essays with an interesting life story. Your ECs are solid. And volunteer work is impeccable! The only thing that your missing now, is the grades. The other applicant has everything you have PLUS the STATS to back it up. Having black, brown, yellow, white skin color shouldn’t be one of those determining factors. There is no excuse for African Americans (and other minorities) being underprivileged. We gave them so many years of affirmative action and they still haven’t reached full potential. While Asians have reached their potential a LONG time ago with no help from policies such as AA.

Can’t afford paying too much? Thats why your applying to the Ivy’s other equivalents? Thats a poor reason to apply to Harvard lol. Go to a good state school. Even a decent private school costing 30 grand a year will give you money with your scores and SAT/ACT. (take out financial aid low interest rate loans like the rest of us)…you think my parents are going to pay my tuition, room & board because I’m white? Hell no lol. Same thing goes for my schools valedictorian going to Brown. And maybe when you’re in college, and by your 2nd year you improve dramatically since high school, you’ll actually earn your spot in a top school by transferring.

I have no idea how to even respond to that last paragraph, andy. How low of you. You should be ashamed of yourself. Uggh.

I want to add to that: My point is, don’t ever mention that you have a harder time getting into college because of your race if it wasn’t for affirmative action.

iltli92- Excuse me? I was explaining how the Chinese overcame obstacles just as large as African Americans up till this date without the help of Affirmative Action. - How low of you to attack my clean argument!

Did you even read what I was critiquing? I can’t believe you told someone that because they are poor, they should go to a “state school”. You said it in a snooty, uppity way. And maybe you aren’t so worthy yourself. I didn’t see YOU get accepted to Yale yet…

Yes I did. - You were calling me “low” for expressing my feelings in a logic and appropriate manner.

Thats not what I’m saying. My parents most definitely can’t afford Yale. Family income for both parents must be around 55k a year. So how am I snooty? Think about what you say before you post something. I’m planning on taking loans out myself. Either that or go to Binghamton because of the extremely low tuition, room and board (15000 a year roughly). Please don’t talk out of your a**.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA, that’s a joke. You’ve said it all yourself. I’m done. bye.

andy: for the record, I was referring to the first post, not second. Please stop harrassing me via PMs.

Your actually harassing me if anything.

iltli92, you are so immature. You’re getting the poor girls hopes up. NO, she will not get into all of them. There is NO way. Stop being an idiot, you’re making yourself look foolish.
