Chance a homeschooler, I'll chance back ! :>

Hey guys :)

Do chance me alright! I'll just list some of my basic stats:

Homeschooler living abroad
GPA: 3.95 (homeschooled GPA, not sure how much weightage this gives)
Concurrent enrolment with a local school (mid-8th grade to mid 11-th): 3.75ish GPA, no weighted (bear in mind at this school an A is a 3.6 GPA and A+ is a 4.0, normally an A is a 4.0) so I have an A to A+ average, one of the top schools in the country
SAT: 1470/2120 (going to retake)
SAT II: Math 2 780, taking several more in Oct, expecting no less than 750 on all of them
ACT: 35 (36R, 36M, 35E, 33S, 10W)
Courses: Homeschooled ones are all college level, will be taking CLEPs next month, pretty much as rigorous as it can get
Rank: 1/1 (LOL)

ECs:
Uniformed Group (local equivalent of Boy/Girl Scouts) for 6 years, promoted to highest rank possible, multiple badges, Vice-chairperson of my unit which was awarded Gold (highest award), now continued in an advisory capability on a national level
FPSPI: Team Captain, 2nd place nationally in 2010 National Qualifier, 4th place internationally at 2011 IC, 1st place nationally in 2011 National Qualifier
Hip Hop Dance: 15 hours a week, perform at least twice a month at various government functions (we're a subsidiary of a govt association)
Cheerleading: All-star team, 25 hours a week
Other less noticeable ECs, clubs etc, with leadership roles
Research project at a local tertiary institution
Scholarship program to learn more about Southeast Asia
Organised international conferences to educate youth about ASEAN for 2 years in a row

Job/Work Experience:
Work 40hours a week throughout the school year and holidays to support my family and extended family, worked as a waitress and in retail

Community service:
Hundreds of hours with various organisations, champion causes for autism and depression.
On track for NYAA (National Youth Achievement Award) and the Congressional Award

Other random things of note:
Some awards in local Math competitions
Hosted various overseas delegates before
I speak 7 languages!!! :)

Intended major: Business/Finance/Econ
Gender: Female
Race: Chinese (Singaporean)
Income bracket: Middle class, I guess, but I help to support extended family which is low-income

So yup that's basically it, I didn't go into too much detail cause I don't wanna sound awkward, but that should give a basic summary for me, as you can see I don't have many awards but I've worked pretty hard throughout my high school life :)

It'd really help if anyone could help me categorise the following schools into safeties/matches/reaches and also if anyone would discourage me from applying to any of the following schools please do help, as I'm trying to cut down my list as there are FAR too many right now!

Chance please :D

Schools I'm looking at:
Indiana U Bloomington (DA to Kelley, I understand the minimum req is a 3.7GPA and 1270SAT, so this should be a safety right?)
UW-Madison
UT Austin
UIUC
U of M (AA)
UVA
USC
Georgetown
Emory
Vanderbilt (my first choice!!!)
Rice
Dartmouth
UPenn
UChicago
MIT
Harvard
Princeton

Thanks lots guys :D If anyone wants me to chance back do comment and when you comment include a link to your thread at the end, I'll definitely help out :D

You’ve got a great chance at your first choice and I think you should be able to get in if you write a very strong application essay. Since you already got 35 on the ACT you don’t really need to retake the SAT.

Thanks shrivats  I’m worried because I don’t have all the conventional AP classes or dual enrollment with a community college that most people seem to have in order to get into top schools ): Any advice?

I would say you have a strong chance of getting accepted at any of those schools, with your strong ECs, ACT and GPA. Your ECs make you stand out of the cookie-cutter asian group because not many asians do dance and cheerleading and rank nationally and internationally as well. Good luck! also, don’t worry about not taking APs; you didn’t have the means of taking them so it can’t be used to harm your chances. Good luck again!

chance me please at “chance me guys!” by me, raca1111
(it might be on the fourth or fifth page since no one has chanced me on it in a day or two)

Thanks raca1111 !! Mildly worrying because I have no idea if schools trust my GPA. Thanks though, the feedback on my lack of APs is reassuring  I’m finding your thread now to chance you!

Anyone think I have too few ECs? I spend lots of time on my ECs, especially with the fact that I work 40 hours a week, but I’m very committed to each of them, so that should be enough right?

Hey, I think you have a great chance!!! You have a unique situation which many colleges like! Good scores and ECs! That is so cool you can speak 7 languages. But yeah you definitely have a great chance at most of those schools! Schools like Harvard and Princeton are iffy so there is no gurantee but you never know!

Chance me back? :)

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1367693-hey-im-senior-craaazy-but-heres-my-app-so-chance-me-maybe.html</a></p>

oh and for your last question, I think your ECs are fine. Remember, quality over quantity.

2300 SAT and submit your ACT and you will have a great chance for all of them.

Thanks gclauds and kiddo! Definitely reassuring!! Much appreciated  Hopefully colleges can see that I’ve done what I could :)

kiddo: Yup retaking the SAT as soon as possible!! Thanks though :D

Bump guys chance please :D

I think your ACT is good enough to compensate for your SAT. You’re in a unique situation due to being homeschooled. I’m only wondering two things: how you are concurrently enrolled in a high school yet still considered homeschooled and how you are planning to get an official record of your homeschooled GPA (if such things are even considered; I’m guessing that parents aren’t considered the most objective graders). Overall, though, I’d say you have a good shot at any of those.

Please chance me back! Here’s my thread: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1366121-chance-me-please-these-colleges.html</a></p>

emberjed: I’m living overseas right now! So I’ve done a couple of years in a local school as well, although not all of them count for credits towards my high school graduation. They teach me languages and math and a couple of sciences but all my electives and history are taught through my parents and most of my courses are AP (I got them approved by collegeboard). Basically I’m getting my high school diploma through homeschooling and that makes me a homeschooler yeah  And homeschool GPAs are not always given due consideration, we get our parents to write a transcript and give grades, not too sure how much weight colleges give them though. We generally look for outside validation,in my case, it’ll be all my test scores and some of my credits were taken from the local school so hopefully that’ll be enough  I’ll chance you back!! :)

Wow SEVEN languages? That’s amazing!
How do you have time to do it all? You cheerlead and dance for at least 40 hrs a week (did I do my math right?), that’s insane. I think it’s great that you work and seem really responsible towards your family, but maybe that’s cause I’m Asian as well and understand the importance of that stuff.

Looking at your schools, you seem very well qualified. I wouldn’t worry too much over AP courses and such, esp surrounding your circumstances and your SAT Subject Tests should take care of that. Look at it this way, despite being homeschooled you’ve managed to excel in almost every aspect of ‘highschool’ life. You do a lot, and do it well, and seem to enjoy it all - that’s truly what counts. I suggest just keeping everything up and remember to have fun. Work hard, play hard, right? :)

Also I don’t think you need to retake the SAT, your ACT score is really high!

Thanks alltiedup (omg love your screen name, just saying  )!! I have the eyebags to prove it haha thanks though, it’s always nice to see fellow Asians who get the whole family thing  You’re so reassuring omg (I need to stop smileying :D) Hopefully my test scores will supplement a homeschool record though! And of course, WORK HARD PLAY HARD to you too!:)

Your rank is really going to help! Being first out of all those kids is great! ;)

HAHAHAHAHAH FEDERICO THAT REALLY MADE ME LAUGH  Any actual chancing please ? :)

your stats are very impressive. I don’t think you need to retake the SAT since many of the schools you are appling to take ACT with writing. I think homeschooling is definitely a significant experience to talk about in essays/interviews. How do your teacher recs work however? Those are definitely important

I think you have a great shot at Vanderbilt but the Ivys may still be a reach

permission: I did concurrent enrollment at a local school, my teachers there are writing my recs  Thank you for chancing !! :)

Cmon guys a lil help here  WILL CHANCE BACK :)

As far as your actually stats, your ACT is phenomenal and your GPA and ECs are great!
The fact that you are home schooled makes you a unique applicant and most of those colleges you mentioned will see that as a plus your app. Dang 7 languages?? can you walk on water too? Haha I digress, as far as your first choice, you have a REALLY good chance at getting in. In fact, you have an outstanding chance at the majority of your choices. As long as you reflect your unique situation via essay, I am sure you will do fine!
