Chance a Junior for UGA/GT/UMICH/ND/UW-Madison/GSU

Schools:

Georgia State - in state
UGA - in state
Georgia Tech - in state (Legacy, Brother currently attends and uncle attended grad school here)
Michigan - (Father attended grad school here, not sure if that helps)
Notre Dame - (Double Legacy: Mother and sister attended as well as numerous aunts and uncles)
Wisconsin - Madison - (Father attended as well as numerous aunts and uncles)

White Caucasian Male
~3.6 Unweighted recalculated GPA, 3.9 Weighted recalculated GPA
9 Honors Classes Through Junior Year (3 Spanish, 2 Lit, 2 Science, 2 Math)
2 AP Classes Through Junior Year: AP Lang and AP Computer Science
6 AP Classes Through Senior Year: (Lang, Comp Sci, Calc AB, Stat, Macro, Micro)

Side Note: Freshman year was fantastic academically, rough patch sophomore year which messed up my GPA due to two deaths in the family, and junior year has been great, getting almost all As first semester and about to be second semester with an honors class, Precal, and 2 APs.

Senior Schedule (4 APs):

AP Micro/AP Macro
AP Calc AB
AP Statistics
PE (required)
Physics
Lit/Comp

6 APs at end of high school

1900 SAT (660 CR, 620 M, 620 W) Taking US History and Lit Subject Tests in the Fall
Not taken ACT yet, been getting 29-32 on practice tests and taking in the fall

I have leadership positions in about 3-5 clubs, and do a good amount of volunteer work with my church, school, and library. I am a good writer, and am confident I can write great essays. Planning on applying EA everywhere but ND and UMICH.

Feel free to let me know my chances. I'll chance back as well!

Thanks!

Georgia State: Safety
UGA: Safety
Georgia Tech: Low Match
Michigan: Match
Notre Dame: Reach
UW Madison: Safety

Please chance me back!

Are you applying for engineering or LSA at UMich? Your uw gpa is a bit low for umich, SAT is about average for LSA. CoE would have an even higher average scores and GPA.

Sent from my NookColor using CC

^Applying as Business major; yes I fully understand UMich is a huge reach. I’m still on the fence about applying, just looking for an accurate opinion on my chances.

Thanks! :)

Does you uw GPA look better without counting 9th grade? I believe UMich do not count that. An no subgrades too. UMich weighs heavily on GPA and you will have a better chance if it is above 3.75.

No, I had a 3.8 UW freshman year so it would help to keep that.

I calculated it myself by taking each letter grade on a 4.0 scale (2, 3, or 4) and adding together and dividing by the number of classes. No inflation at all.

What are my chances at the other schools besides UMich?

Thanks!

Bump this up, looking for some honest answers!

Chance me PLEASE!

I’ll chance you back right away. Help me out guys!

Thanks!

Michigan and ND are getting increasingly getting tougher to get into, ND coming close to 25% acc. rate, and Michigan coming to around 30%. Stats are low for both of them, legacies will help at ND, but UMich doesn’t really look at legacies too much, especially grad school, because they have so many students that have been through there and many people have connections.

GT- Safety
GS- Safety
Georgia- Low Match
UWM- Match
ND-Reach
UMich-Reach

If you get denied from ND and Mich, I’d highly recommend UGA. Their honors college is top notch, which you are lucky to get with in-state tuition. I believe you have a good shot of getting into that program. Even if you were accepted at Notre Dame, you are looking at 10k a year vs 55k a year. That is an extra 180k in debt, a huge difference there. Just take that into consideration as well. Good luck on your admissions though.

Thanks so much! Yeah I’m not expecting anything for ND or UMich but I’m hoping for good news everywhere else.

you have a VERY good chance of being accepted into all of those schools, except ND and UMich.
If you are really into UMich, i would apply because i still think you have a shot.
Notre Dame is the hardest school of those to get into, but again, you might as well try because you have solid stats

The way of GPA calculation is determined by the school, not you. So you may want to check how those schools you applied to calculate the GPA from high school. For example, UMich does not count freshmen grades and do not use subgrades in calculation (i.e. A1, A, A+ are all the same as 4.0). If you show a gradual improvement from Sophomore to Junior (and Senior), it may help to offset the impact of low GPA a little bit.

Junior year has by far been my best academic year; 3.8 UW first semester and I’m on pace to match that or hit a 4.0 UW second semester.

Junior year was best, then freshman year, then sophomore year.

Any chance you can chance me for the other schools? Thanks Bill!

Please take the time to chance me!

I will chance you back ASAP!

Thanks!

Georgia State - Match
UGA - Match
GATech - Match
Mich - Probably a Reach
NDame - On match/reach border, leaning towards reach
Wisconsin - Match/reach, leaning towards match

I’d strongly recommend you aim for higher ACT/SAT scores. You’re saying 32 - I’m saying 33, maybe a 34. I know it’s a challenge, but it’ll be worth it in the end. With a 34, those matches become strong matches, but more importantly, THOSE REACHES ARE MORE ATTAINABLE.

I’d recommend you buff up your senior schedule a bit. Sure, it’s asking a lot, but let me tell you, AP Macro is drop dead easy and Micro isn’t much harder. If you can, do some other AP Courses - especially the social sciences. Psych’s pretty decent (from what I’ve heard). If you’ve got the space, take it. If you cant’t, consider taking some AP online classes over the summer, they’re not that bad.

Doing so will not only help your GPA, but also show to colleges that you’re ready to take on whatever comes your way in college.

I’d recommend (possibly) doing some SAT IIs - Math I for sure, US or World History if you think you can do them. They’re not required, but they show you care to colleges (and can also get you free credits, if you’re lucky!).

You could also try a tiny bit of help with your ECs. They’re fine from what I see, but founding a club and making it go somewhere shows exceptional leadership. Not that they wouldn’t doubt you already have that, but it can’t hurt. If not, then just continue to excell in your ECs, maybe do something cool over the summer with them, up to you.

Do you have any plans over the summer for jobs/interns/college visits/college camps (“summer experience”), etc? Also could help.

Hope I helped. I’ll be glad to reply back with any questions you might have.
On the flipside, would you mind chancing me back? http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1494053-do-i-have-shot-princeton.html

Prepping for ACT and US History and Literature subject tests every day. Will definitely try to get as high into the 30s as possible!

I’m currently registered for regular Lit right now, but am seriously considering taking AP Lit instead. I’m currently in AP Lang and will finish with As both semesters but I only receive credit for either Lang or Lit, and I know I will get a 4/5 on Lang. Should I stick with regular or take AP Lit even though I won’t get credit?

Definitely working more with my clubs next year to take that extra step. This summer, I have two jobs and will also be doing volunteer work at a local charity, library, and Habitat for Humanity. I also do a little with Goodwill and my church.

Thanks for your help. Awesome post and I appreciate your suggestions and honesty. I will chance you right away.

Good!

AP Lit without a doubt. Doesn’t matter if you won’t get credit; not taking a harder class your senior years shows you aren’t willing to take up the challenge. You’re willing to take the challenge, aren’t you?

Good as well. Try to get 250+ hours - you’ll be eligible for the President’s Gold Community Service Award (if I remember right, called something like that), which is a definite booster to your resume.

Hope I helped! Thanks for the chance back, if you have any questions, just throw me a line.

EDIT: Forgot to add this helpful information about my school. Freshman are not allowed to take AP classes, and there is only 1 AP class available for sophomores, World History.

Please chance thanks!

Bump for the day.

Please chance; I will return the chance!

Thanks!

Bump it up! Chance me please and thank you!
