Chance a Lazy Black Kid (Will Chance Back)

Hey guys! I know being a URM will play a role in my admission and probably in your chances as well so I decided to mention it. I'm a rising senior. My application is strong in some areas, lacking in others but I hope you'll take some time to chance me, I'll gladly do the same. Please be honest in your posts, it means a lot. I know my grades aren't stellar but I freely admit to having slacked off in school (primarily my sophomore year, there's an upward trend from sophomore to junior) and so some of these schools may be out of reach.

GPA: 3.76 Weighted, 3.45 unweighted. My school district (Fairfax County Virginia) is known, at least in-state, for its rigor.

SAT: 680 M, 680 CR, 800 W (1360/2160)
SAT IIs: Lit 720, US 730
(I plan on either retaking the SAT for a 1450/2250-range score or trying out the ACT. I'm confident that I can get to a 750 in CR based on practice tests and my experience in AP Lang this year. I have to take the Math II subject test so I might as well retake Lit and US too, I didn't study for either of them).

APs: World History 3, Chemistry 2, US History 5, Lang 5, Psych 5

Senior Schedule: (still being decided)
AP Literature
AP Government
AP Environmental
AP Calc AB or BC
Latin 4
Journalism 5
Film Studies or AP Music Theory

ECs/Extra things:
-Editor-in-Chief of my school newspaper (been a member since 8th grade)
-President of my school's chapter of Key Club
-Captain of my Quizbowl/It's Academic Team (will compete on national television this school year)
-Currently have two jobs, I referee youth basketball and I work for a local pizza place
-Went to Virginia Boys State, joined the House of Delegates, got 2nd place in a Toastmasters public speaking competition

Hook of Sorts:
I've been pretty involved with journalism. I've been in journalism classes since 8th grade and I'm now the editor-in-chief of my school's paper. I'll be attending a weeklong Washington Post internship in August and I'm trying to get involved with a local paper (not sure how much time I'll have for that though.)

I have community service but not a lot of it is logged and documented. I don't know exactly how community service hours work for a college app. I'm planning to volunteer for a gubernatorial candidate soon.

Financial Aid: Yeah

The List:
UVA (instate)
William and Mary (instate)
Northwestern University
Wesleyan University
University of Pittsburgh
University of Rochester
Tulane University

We really need an unweighted GPA to give any predictions that aren’t completely pulled out of our asses. Schools weight GPAs all sorts of different ways, so weighted GPA doesn’t really help all that much. If you have a transcript or other record of your grades, you could figure it out. If not, try to estimate one.

Hmm, all right I added by unweighted GPA, I just calculated it out, it’s a 3.45

UVA - Low Reach
William and Mary - High Match/Low Reach
Northwestern University - Reach
Wesleyan University - High Match/Low Reach
University of Pittsburgh - Match
University of Rochester - High Match
Tulane University - Low Match

Thanks for the chance michael, i’ve chanced you back.

Would also like to add NYU to this list for any other prospective chancers

Wow. Great leadership positions and rigor of academics; you will definitely have a stronger appeal if you increase your standardized scores, but of course, you knew that already! Best of luck, sir.

UVA (instate)-In
William and Mary (instate)-High Match
Northwestern University-Low Reach
Wesleyan University-I don’t know
University of Pittsburgh-In
University of Rochester-I don’t know
Tulane University-In

I’d say low match for NYU, but if you need substantial financial aid, you might want to reconsider applying. NYU is notorious for having bad FA.

Thanks Michael for the tip, yeah I may have to take that into consideration because I’ll be needed financial aid, i think.

Anyone else?

The List:
UVA (instate)- I want to say match, but UVA is notorious for being weird about admissions for kids in NoVa (I’m sure you know that). Your URM will certainly help. I’ll say high match/low low reach.
William and Mary (instate)- match
Northwestern University - reach
Wesleyan University - reach
University of Pittsburgh - in
University of Rochester - in
Tulane University - high match/low reach

Everything seems like a match except Weselyan. My friend got higher grades (I don’t mean to make it come off as an insult) and 2280 SAT and is black too and got rejected. I think Weselyan is pretty strict with their admissions.

URM’s in da houseeee
Anyways I think…

UVA - Low Reach
William and Mary - High Match
Northwestern University - Reach
Wesleyan University - Lower Reach
University of Pittsburgh - In
University of Rochester - Match
Tulane University - In

Chance back?: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/741629-chance-improvements-2011-urm.html

The List:
UVA (instate): match-high match
William and Mary (instate): they can be weirdly choosy, so probably high match-low reach
Northwestern University: reach
Wesleyan University: high match
University of Pittsburgh: low match
University of Rochester: low match
Tulane University: low match
NYU: match-high match (closer to match)

Your ECs are really enviable. I think that if you can boost your CR score a bit you’ll have a great shot. Hell, not to be racist, but your stats plus your URM status might be down the alleys of a few Ivies! Think about applying to them, too. Good luck man!
