Chance a Lazy Senior Who Hasn't Done Much and Is Still Procrastinating

Indian male at public high school

GPA:
-unweighted: 3.50,
-weighted: 4.99
SAT:
-Mar 09: CR 740, M 710, W 680: 2130
-Oct 09: CR 760, M 690, W 800: 2250
SAT IIs:
-US History: 800
-Lit: 780
-Chem: 690 (not submitting--yay score choice!)
-Math II and Spanish w/ Listening: taken Nov 09; I don't expect a good score in Span...
APs:
-AP US History: 5
-AP Lang & Comp: 5
-Taking in May '10: Bio, Lit, Calc AB, Spanish, French, (maybe German and Chem)

ECs (terrible):
-Tennis 9th and 11th grades, maybe 12th but it's in spring
-Rotary 10th, 11th, 12th; I've volunteered at its Soup Kitchen
-JFK Hospital: 11th, 12th
-Social Studies Honors Society: 11th, 12th (not recognized nationally)
-work at a tutoring place since June '09 (waste of time, really shoddy place, mentally unstable boss)
-(got rejected from NHS because of crappy ECs)

National Merit 11th grade

Essays: working on them. For my Common App essay, I will most likely compare myself to some character from a book, or write about a significant experience.

Recommendations from AP USH teacher and AP Lang Comp teacher. Should I get one from math or science teacher? And also one from guidance counselor.

Applying to:
-Cornell
-Johns Hopkins
-UNC at Chapel Hill
-Rutgers (6-Year Pharmacy Program)
-The College of New Jersey (7-Year BA/MD)
-University of Chicago

I was also thinking about UPenn or Brown, but I'm thinking I'll most likely be rejected--same feelings on Cornell and Chicago. I'm really unsure, though. I want to major in Biology or Chemistry, some premed course. Also, I'm really interested in languages and linguistics, which is why I'm studying for AP language exams.

Chance me, and I'll chance you.

-Cornell - Low Reach
-Johns Hopkins - High Match/Low Reach
-UNC at Chapel Hill - High Match
-Rutgers (6-Year Pharmacy Program) - I’m unfamiliar with the program but you’re in at the school without a doubt
-The College of New Jersey (7-Year BA/MD) - See Rutgers
-University of Chicago - High Match/Low Reach

I definatley think that if you wanted to you could apply to a higher Ivy and at least be considered. If you are willing to play tennis during the spring then you can put it on your application as long as you go through with it. I would recommend doing so as it shows some kind of consistency and dependency. The lack of ECs is really the killer here, as I think you know, so maybe doing or planning on doing some extra community service hours, even at this late point in the year, might be a good bet. Like I said, with your scores you at least have a shot at some of the higher ivies, but the list you have now looks pretty balanced as well.

If you get a minute then, Chance Back? : http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/806870-senior-worried-about-chances-top-southern-schools.html</a></p>

I think your pretty good, you do lack the EC’s and extra stuffs here and there though. Get some good community service hours or something in there? I would say
-Cornell - Low Reach
-Johns Hopkins - Low Reach
-UNC at Chapel Hill - No clue
-Rutgers (6-Year Pharmacy Program) - Good
-The College of New Jersey (7-Year BA/MD) - No clue
-University of Chicago - Good shot

Thanks. Yeah, I’m scrambling like mad for any community service I can get. Basically I’m going to put school on hold and try to get around 150 hours through school clubs and public places like hospitals.

Oh, should I take SATs again? Like in December?

I don’t think there’s room for improvement in SAT I. Your Math score actually dropped the second time, so that’s probably your limit. Focus on your essays - if you can show that you aren’t overly academically-oriented, that might alleviate your lack of ECs.
Most schools require or recommend a recommendation from a math/science teacher, and since you’re majoring in a natural science subject, you should definitely get one.

Hmm, SAT Subject Test scores came back. Not that it would change my chances that much, but I got a 780 on the Math II. I’m still taking Bio or Chem and Spanish in December (10 days from now). Also, I’ve been scrambling for volunteer work and other things that I can add. But I don’t want to put petty things that colleges will deliberately ignore.

Give me any advice you think I should listen to. What should I focus on right now?

Ah, College Board, you’ve pi$$ed away so much of my money, time, and effort.

Definitely in at rutgers

Cornell won’t accept score choice. FYI

Cornell-reach
Chicago, Hopkins, UNC-CH-low reach/high match

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/816994-chances-will-return.html</a></p>

can i just ask how it’s possible to have a 4.99 weighted gpa if you have a 3.5 unweighted?
other than that i think most of em are low reaches or matches
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/816945-chances-ucs.html</a>
chance back please!

The disparity between your unweighted and weighted is mind-boggling! Is the weighted on a 4.0 scale with an extra grade point for AP/Honors!?

-Cornell- low to mid reach
-Johns Hopkins- high match
-University of Chicago- high match

There’s no use taking the SAT again. It is a very good score for all those schools! You don’t have that many EC’s though, and thats the one thing that will hurt you the most.</p>

Best of Luck!

Chance back? http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/816932-cha-chance-me-will-chance-back.html</a></p>

The unweighted is out of 4.00, and the weighted is out of 6.33, I think.
