Recs/Essays

Recommendations: From the three best teachers I know (my three AP teachers junior year). Also, I'm expecting a good one from my counselor.

CommonApp Essay: About my marching band experiences and what I learned yada yada...

Penn Supplement: This explains how I will take advantage of the PPE major and Penn's interdisciplinary studies. Also, how I will be giving back with my EC experience.

Additional Information

I have an extreme upward trend from a 3.3 GPA my freshman/sophomore to a 4.0 GPA my junior year. I'm anticipating a 4.0 senior year. I had issues my first two years that I think my guidance counselor will be discussing in her letter.

Also, I'm sending in an Arts Supplement to show my percussion and composition skills.

good chance, that music stuff is impressive

Good chance? Even with a 3.56 UW GPA?

Also, thank you for the compliment. :)

your ec’s are excellent, but your scores will most definitely hurt your chances of admission- I don’t want to be a downer, but realistically, your chances of getting into Penn are very little.

Penn has accepted lower. Your acceptance is based on your essays much more than your scores. I think you have a great chance.

Well, they say top 5% is average for Penn and you are top 8%. Yeah, it probably won’t work for you, but they won’t reject you for it. It may be even a completely different process for you since you may be applying for a music program, but from a general standpoint, I think you have about a 50/50 chance.

Low chance

I’m gonna disagree with the naysayers, and assume that if you make good on your word and:
a) retake Lit and USHIS - each at least over 720
b) actually score 800 on Math II (it’s not that hard, but things can go wrong)
c) have a 4.0 senior year
and
that your recs and essays are good

I would say that you have a very good chance!

Wait…three teacher recs? Is there any particular reason for that? Unless I’ve been reading the whole application wrong…

Ah, sorry. I copy and pasted this from my previous chance thread. I am sending 3 recommendations to a few colleges (the ones that allow me). Penn only lets you send two I believe…

One final bump. I sent in my application last night! :)

Assuming your completely bigotist comments and viewpoints, like

“The village is full of gays” and thus thinking the village is bad,

don’t show up in your essays, you’re a subpar applicant.

Assuming your actual personality/viewpoints shows up in your essays… No chance.

Btw, little funsies tip… Philly is considered to be the gay city of the east coast… Like San Fran is to west coast. And gays are highly prominent in academia. Oh, and Penn has quite a few gay students.

TOB is better than USSBA. Just saying.

Bands that can’t do well in USSBA join TOB. Just saying ;D And my band has also been a TOB Champion, so you can’t say there are better bands in it.

Nazareth Area High School hasn’t been in TOB for nearly a decade, you were probably, like, six when that happened. Don’t use that excuse.

… I’m not going to even try to bite on this.

And we’ve only gotten better since 1997…so one can assume…nevermind. But USSBA bands are better. My friend is now director of a marching band that did USSBA last year (scored poorly), so he decided to move onto TOB because he knew they could fair better…which they did.

I didn’t know two bands’ histories = the general correlation between success and band circuits through the region. If you learned anything in AP Psychology you’d have learned in one of the first chapters that you shouldn’t take such a small sample size to generalize something that affects a large region.

And stop bragging about something that you had a much smaller part in your band’s success than you make yourself out to be. You didn’t lead Nazareth to championships by yourself. Universities should know that winning championships is a team thing, not purely from one person.

But back on topic. GPA will kill you but you know that. Hopefully you applied already because it’s worth a shot.

Listen, if you’re going to get defensive, then why did you bring up the topic in the first place? To start a flame war? It was completely off-topic and uncalled for. And while I didn’t singlehandedly lead my band to a victory, I am pretty much the only person that keeps the drumline focused and in shape. So I like to think that I play more of a role than the average member.

Also, I didn’t realize learning how to work as a team was a bad thing. Cause, you know, in the real world people totally do things all by themselves with no human interaction. Right?

Both of you. Are you kidding? Who cares who is right. THe purpose of this thread is to help each other try and get into PENN while giving honest feedback. I have not seen such a back and forth about an off topic in years.

Lead tenors aren’t part of the battery, and marching band isn’t the same as Wall Street or business firms. Just saying. (And I never said working as a team is a bad thing)

I’m not going to post in this anymore because clearly we have some growing up to do and it’s your topic, though if what NYU2013 is true then the amount of growing up isn’t the same for both of us. Good luck and I hope for the best for you, your future and your band.
