Chance a Nervous Senior?

I think I'm sponging panic off the people around me. Don't be super harsh just to be a jerk. Don't get me wrong, I want feedback, but I don't want to be eviscerated.

So here we are...

Gender: Female
Location: Texas
GPA (5.0 scale): 4.74
Rank: 1/550something
SAT: 2270 (790CR, 690M, 790W) only took it once, not retaking
SAT IIs: Taking Lit, Math I, and Bio(M) in November. All signs point to a 700-750 on Bio and a 750+ on Lit. I'm retarded at math.
AP/Honors Classes: I'm actually an International Baccalaureate student. All the classes I have taken that are not IB classes are AP classes. This year, I am taking IB Calculus, IB Visual Art, IB English, IB 20th Century World Topics, IB Anatomy & Physiology, and Theory of Knowledge (which is also an IB course). I've already taken one IB test (Spanish SL) on which I scored a 6/7. I got a 5 on the only AP test I have ever taken (Human Geo).

Extracurriculars: (Weak I know.)
-2 years JV Golf (9,10)
-International Baccalaureate Program (11,12) (I only call this an extracurricular because so much of it occurs outside of class. For example, Group 4 projects and extended essays are not in-class assignments, and require independent initiative and research.)
-IB Creativity, Action, and Service (CAS) activities and journals and related projects, such as being a registered blood donor and participating in Breast Cancer Awareness Month activities. (11,12) (CAS encourages students to select a few activities they care about, keep up with them, and write about and reflect upon them frequently. It basically favors dedication and insight over mere bulk.)
-Assembly of a complete 18 piece art gallery as an IB art project. (11,12)
-Three years of volunteer work at a city animal shelter prior to high school. (This involved raising money for the shelter -- which is severely underfunded -- by making and selling homemade dog treats. I also did other, more generic things, like feeding and general care of the animals at the shelter. I also photographed animals and made write-ups for them and put them in an online database called Petfinder.)
-Academic Octathlon (10)
-Art competitions and the creation of art/art portfolios in general, for school and independently. (9,10,11,12)

Awards:
-National Merit Semifinalist
-TX State Octathlon (Gold in Essay and SQ Relay)
-Scholastic Regional Art Competition (1 gold key, 3 silver keys, 2 bronze keys, and 1 honorable mention; two separate years)
-Youth Art Month (Blue)
-Humane America (National Runner-up in a competition that served to spotlight teens dedicated to volunteer service in animal shelters. I got this award when I was 12.)
-New College Junior Scholar Award
-High Honor Roll (4 years)

As an aside, apparently I'm really good at writing.

Anyway, chance me for:
Rice University
Reed College
Vassar College
Brown University
Stanford University
Johns Hopkins University
University of Chicago
Washington University in St. Louis

Thanks.

I would conservatively say that you are in everywhere but Brown and Stanford, and that Chicago, WashU, and JHU should be your target schools, with Brown and Stanford as a reach/target category. I say that they are good target/reach schools only because I don’t see too much in the Extra-curricular category and I cant assess your writing or character from a blurb like this. Thus, I think these are the things you have to emphasize in your applications, because your academics are outstanding. This is a strong list of schools by the way; these schools are very diverse and you’re being reasonable with yourself. Good Luck!

Is your GPA like 4.74 out of 5.00 unweighted? Or is it like 4.74 out of 4.00 weighted with a 5.00 being the maximum you can get weighted?

I’m not exactly sure what you’re asking. We get 5 points for weighted classes and 4 for unweighted classes, but everyone has to take unweighted classes like health and speech.

I’ve never made a B. My transcript contains only As… the only reason my GPA isn’t a 5 is that everyone has to take unweighted classes.

Okay… I’ve just looked it up. I suppose it’s weighted. 5 for As in weighted classes. 4 for a B. 4 for an A in an unweighted class.

Also… I could post a writing sample. My head is exploding.

jesus. Those are intense stats.
Rice University–in
Reed College–in
Vassar College–in
Brown University–probably in
Stanford University–reachish (for anyone…you have a good chance though)
Johns Hopkins University–probably in
University of Chicago–lowish reach
Washington University in St. Louis–match

Thanks for the input.

Argh, oops… I meant to add up top that my essay score on the SAT was a 12.

Up it goes.

Not to sound arrogant, but none of these posters, including myself can sufficiently determine where and where you can not get in. Of course there are statistics listed on each school’s website, however, they are only numbers. Unless a poster here was or is an admissions officer, they base everything off of stats. There are reputations to maintain, certainly, but apply and feel confident. If anything, the reason you do not get accepted is because you were not confident in yourself and your application.

Oh no, I know… I just feel like I know nothing, despite the amount of reading I’ve done.

It seems like my peer group are all freaking out about things. I mean, I was talking to a boy whose raw SAT score is a 1500 yesterday and he was telling me that he’s afraid he won’t get into a state university. He was being completely serious.

Until about a month ago, I hadn’t been that worried. I’d been really confident, even. But hearing all these people talk aout how they’re not going to get admitted anywhere made me wonder.

As nmcm suggests, ignore most of those “in” guesses. E.g., at Reed, SAT/ACT+GPA+rank together make up only 20% of admission criteria. Think of the schools as 50/50 matches, mostly unpredictable. But your numbers are good!

I guess my primary concern is that I’m not going to get in anywhere due to my weak extracurricular activities.

Again, my peers keep telling me that I’m pretty much screwed as far as that goes.

I think your peers are ignorant. Your stats are great, and you seem to have a great passion for art. Submit a portfolio. Art is very time consuming, and adcoms know that. Or you could submit a writing portfolio, if your writing is that good. Relax, and let your true self come through in your applications.
