You are international and a lot of those schools are need aware.

I personally think your list of schools is extremely unrealistic. You need to focus on more state schools and some of the CUNY schools who will give you preference for being a NYS resident.

For a few of those schools, you do not have ECs /Work exp to even be a competative applicant. A 3.84 is not impressive for those schools without other substantially impressive qualifications.

Thanks donjuan78 … well I am going to take SAT this Jan… so i will have my scores by Feb 15…
Two of my freinds from Onondaga got in for Biology at NYU and Cornell with a 3.3. and 3.4 GPA respectively … but…I am still going to keep my fingers crossed.

By Summer of Fall '08… I will have 122 credits … in just a 2 year period… don’t you think universities will look upto that … where the normal courseload in 64 credits.
Second, I am not international … if you mean “international” as “international applicant” … i am a permanent resident

Malishka 31:
I do have workexperience, acitvity and volunteer work. But they are too many to list them all down.

most universities only accept around 60 or so credits so if you have 122 credits when you apply then most admissions boards will lose interest in your application not to mention if you were to get accepted then you would end up losing 62 credits. most colleges require somewhere between 120-140 credits to graduate.

So hokie2008…people who don’t even essay to get academically enlightened in the same amount of time are “better-off” …

I spoke to adcoms in UTEXAS (coz UTEXAS-McCombs won’t accept students with more than 90 credits and apprises such students to complete their bachelors degree at their current university and apply again for Graduate studes at UTEXAS) …the adcom was astounded…and was trying to figure out how I did it…lol! She told me to affix a short paragraph explicating why did I took so many credits … also that I acknowledge I will look 60+ credits if admitted…and that I didnot take those courses with the intention of transferring them (i basically took it just to diversify my academic background and become a competitive applicant)

With your reply, Malishka’s and donjuan… I think I am floating in the skies … just waiting for an aeroplane to strike me down!

well im not sure about UT but i know for a fact that UVa only accepts 60 credits (im trying to transfer there myself so ive done more research on that school) but i guess some universities have different requirements. i know for many universities you are required to spend atleast 2 years there. also many universities have prereq courses to take before you can apply into their schools. once more im not sure what the prereqs are for the other universities but ill attach a link to the ones required by UVa just so youll have a better idea on which classes to plan for on your upcoming semester.

[U.Va. Office of Admission > Transfer Students > Transfer Core Course Requirements](http://www.virginia.edu/undergradadmission/transferrequirements.html)

Thanks a bunch hokie2008!
My 122 credits satisfy pre-requisites for all the 11 universities I am going to apply to.

Hokie can you tell me what are my chances at the aforementioned universities? Please be honest … don’t worry abt ec’s

even if you take the SAT scores, some of those schools will still remain at a low percentage…in the singles digit

im not completely sure about all of them but i can tell you more about UVa. i think you might have a good shot at emory, cornell, and syracuse (i think emory has about a 35% selection rate). UVa. tends to accept alot of community college students but a very large majority of them are in state (UVa is required by the state to accept a fixed number of instate students) so being OOS and coming from a CC you might have a hard time getting in especially into their mcintire school (i wanted to apply into mcintire at first but after seeing their acceptance rates i chose not to).

id say
UVa. 5-15% (UVa is very strict on OOS students and applying into mcintire makes it even worse)
Emory 15-30% (emory doesnt have a problem accepting OOS since they are private and they have a fairly high acceptance rate)
Cornell 15-25% (same rules as emory but they accept less applicants)
Syracuse about a 55% (id say this is your best shot since their acceptance rate is around 50%. i would say that they may be familiar with your CC since it is in the same area so that may help a bit also).

once more this is assuming that you do take your SATs and score relatively high on them and your financial need isnt too great (that is for those universities that are need-based).

personally i would apply to all of them just for the hell of it but id say your best chances (as far as my limited knowledge of your list of universities goes) is:

syracuse

UT

USC

emory

cornell

im not sure how well the rest would be ranked.

I think ur right … i should apply to all of them just for the sake…
who knows??? I am also thinking about Ross-UMICH rather than Wharton

At the end of the day … none of us are experts … since my freinds got in at 3.3 and 3.4 GPA to NYU and Cornell for Biology major … with one having no ec’s … while ther other scoring 980 in SAT out of 1600 … one being Indian…the other Kyrgyz… I am somewhat skeptical of the credibility of this forum and “some” posters…

TO ALL THE FUTURE POSTERS … DON’T GET ASTRAYED FROM YOUR APPLICATION PROCESS BY COMMENTS FROM “NON-EXPERT” PEOPLE IN THIS FORUM … AS HOOKIE SAYS…JUST GIVE IT A TRY! THE REST IS UPTO GOD!

bump!..

your 120 credits is going to be a problem for some schools; there’s been a lot of applicants on here denied because of this.

You have no shot at Wharton, sorry but that’s one of the most selective schools in the world for transfers so save the $70 or whatever it is for the app. fee.

Cornell Aem doesn’t look like you have your pre-reqs done so it’s unlikely. Stern USC Emory you may have a pretty good shot at.

stone thanks for the reply…

Well I have talked to adcoms in most universities I am going to apply to…
most of them asked me how did i accumulate so many courses in just two years … second…they told me that only 60+ will transfer … they told me that they won’t defer me provided that I haven’t taken too many business courses… all of them had the same answer…just to attach a short note stating why you took so many courses and that I do acknowledge that I will loose half the credits during transfer process.

Stone … if you actually see my transcript…i only have 5 business courses… of them 2 are pre-requisites for the universities while the other 3 are required by my community college for an associates degree. The rest are social sciences, humanities, english and sciences. Also I am pursuing a dual associates degree in 2 years … so that adds up to 122.

You’re right… I am going to replace Wharton with Ross.

Remember people with too many credits are denied “only” if they come from a 4-year university … I was talking to one of the adcoms at UTEXAS … and actually pointed out a mistake in their own rule … their rule asseverates that “transfer students with more than 90 credits will not be considered for admission and are encouraged to complete bachelors at their current institution and then pursue Graduate studies at McComb’s” … lol! how can you expect a community college student to have bachelors at a community college.

Well…they said that in my case…it won’t be a problem…and McComb’s will understand that I am in a different situation.

bump…!..

Stop bumping! Your thread didnt even move down that much…plus, no one can answer your chances thread because they are all reaches.

Every time I come across the transfers forum, there are always unbelievable high qualified applicants.

For the top schools, it’s completely a roll of the dice. One little thing in your essay/resume/recommendation might be all it takes to get you in.

illinifan…thanks!
i would have to say one thing… don’t feel initimidated by all these unbelievable applicants … Just keep your morale boosted … and aim for the best …

I can answer that for berkeley if you have all of your units from a community college they are ok with that and will not auto reject you but they will let you transfer only 80 semester units. Make sure you have the preqs for HAAS done, if not it is an automatic rejection.

Your chances for berkeley will stay slim because as a public, just like UVA they favor community college students from their perspective state. Additionally for that program you are also competing with students that already attend berkeley and i am sure they would rather accept a 3.84 that already attends and has showed they can do well at Cal rather than a student form another CC. That program is only at the junior level so you end up competing with all the other students that want to major in that but already attend.
So for Berkeley i would keep your chances in the low ranger.. but then again you did not post your ECs and your grades are really not enough, did you start up some sort of business, do you have an internship and G&S or Mckinsey? THose things would change your chances A LOT.

Thanks for your reply Malishka …
Tell me… how can you expect a student to get accepted for an accounting internship … when your prospective four year university admonishes you from taking any second year accounting course and business courses…

Second of all … I was offered accounting internship by RB Woodcrafts and Community Bank NA…but i couldn’t intern due to time conflict with some important courses… but then how would you expect a student who takes up course overload to intern as well! That sounds so unrealistic…

Third of all … the academic structure in South Asia is not the same as in United States … we don’t have to work because our family support us financially and morally through our graduate education…nobody I ever came across in my whole life did volunteer work in Karachi…our schools are more academic oriented than pragmatic … we don’t do stuff like internships until we get a bachelors… this is what I embody … and for me… academia is more important in the “initial” part of post secondary education … I also look forward to doing internships but that is when I get some academia behind me…

I am a professional web-designer. Most of my ec’s are graphic designing and marketing oriented. I founded a charity business that focused on designing websites and online marketing for African charity organizations based in Europe (UK, Italy) (Names are confidential) … I conducted a marketing project for an organization based in Nassau, Bahamas. Furthermore, I have done volunteer work for Salvation Army and Red Cross… did Arts and Drama in my high school and secondary school … so on and so forth… there is much more…
I have travelled to India, Sri Lanka, Saudi Arabia, U.K., Canada, U.S., Guatemala, Honduras.

Anyways… are my grades really bad as compared to other students… ?
Malshika it’s worth trying…i am aware about the fact that Berkeley prefers in-state CC students …

But I have one more important asset with me … which actually my counsellor pointed out to me… First my location … US NORTH EAST … Secondly, I am Asian - with my Indian heritage and Pakistani nationality…

The population of Pakistani students in Berkeley has considerably decreased since past few years… thats what a former UCB Pakistan Student Association President told me…

It might all prove wrong… I might get rejected…but … at the end of the day… I will atleast have the satisfaction that I did endeavour for Berkeley … rather than not applying at all!

YEAH!!! MEN DON’T CRY… BUT I WILL… IF I DON’T GET INTO CORNELL, NYU, UVA, BERKELEY AND UTEXAS… IT WILL BE REALLY SHATTERING FOR ME…
