** I know my EC's suck, but I'm trying to get them up Junior/Senior year

** School doesn't rank, but I have one of the higher GPA's, top 10%, maybe top 5% (school isn't very competitive, nice school district but not many kids go to Ivies)

** I have not taken any SAT's yet but I did get a 191 on the PSATs, which I know is very low but I did not study for the test at all, and also had never taken any sort of test like it. Since, I have been studying rigorously for the SAT's which I will take next year. MY score will definitely improve from the PSAT- SAT predicted score of 1910.

** I'm not sure what I'd like to major in, both History and Nursing interest me. I'm between like high school history teacher and nurse, random I know haha.

** I am Hispanic (Mexican) , not sure if this helps my chances?

** Female, from Pennsylvania

So, assuming all goes well (Straight A's, 5's on all AP Exams, successful EC involvement, raised SAT Score) what are my chances at Duke?

This is just a random list of places I really like. I especially like and have taken interest in Villanova. Could you chance me please and also recommend schools that would be a good fit? And perhaps schools that would give me any sort ofscholarship?

Thank you!!

Rather than place these in each of the forums you are interested in, go to the “what are my chances” section and post there where people actually give chances for all the schools at one.

you’re chances are good considering that you improve junior year. I am not an admissions person, so I can’t tell you how your app will do (this is pretty early to ask also for you, but I wish I had done the same before). Rather than asking for your chances, focus on your studies and forget that there is such a thing as college. DO something unique your junior year, like an internship in what you are interested in. I only realized it until now in my senior year that your junior year is what you make of it, and it is truly the year that COUNTS. ABSOLUTELY focus on studies and school. My 2 cents :)

You have wonderful grades and a great transcript… However a 1910 on SATs would certainly drag down your app alot! Work on bringing those up and you’ll have solid chances:)!

I’d say sure.

But do what you want to do, and everything will turn out okay :)

Do whatever makes you happy… don’t join EC’s just to do them. Do what you do well.

good luck:)

i think you have a solid chance of getting in duke especially if you apply ED, but you are still early in the process. keep up the grades, and get a higher SAT score, and you should be fine!
one question: did you not take math 10th grade?

your ecs GPA and school course rigor are great…
But you have to raise that sat scor 90 points at least…
then apply ED…
then youd have a great shot…
GD luck :D

plz chance bacck

great grades and course rigor :). i’d work on getting your sat scores up and you have a good shot at duke.
it seems like you don’t have a lot ecs and you should get more involved in things that you actually like, not just things you think will look good to colleges. that’s what they really want to see.

good luck :)

I think your chances are extremely high if you raise your SAT score. Also try taking the ACT, some people do better on that test (the science is more speed & common sense, if you’re good at that sort of thing). I think you should try taking the SAT and ACT at least once each this year, because I actually did better junior year than this year (I am a senior). PLEASE chance me back

As long as you score above 2,100 on the SAT, you are in. With a 1,910 it’s possible to, a good match. I would try for school even more selective than Duke if you get above 2,200 on the SAT. Being a minority does help.

Chance me back:
<a href=“Chance me. I will do best chance back. - Applying to College - College Confidential Forums”>Chance me. I will do best chance back. - Applying to College - College Confidential Forums;

yeahhh i think its like probably an exact match for you. good luck!!!

chance back? http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1058003-will-chance-back-please-chance-me-following-shcools.html#post1066137264</a></p>

Match.

 • you are a URM which bumps your chances up A LOT.

My S attends and SAT is important to the extent that a lot of kids have good GPA of class rank and you have to measure them based on a single exam where they all compete on a level field. My S got a 2340 on his SAT if that helps. THe kids that got accepted all had that type of score or were within 50 points or so. Not to say that you can’t get accepted with a lower SAT. Anyone really considering that should go early decision. It looks like th enumbers will be brutal this year with fewer spots open due to the high number of ED candidates. But the stats look good otherwise- as far as EC - do one thing you have great passion for, quality not quantity is usually best.

Duke is a high match/ low reach. You’ll definitely be in at Villanova. You might also like Lehigh, Lafayette, and Boston College.

Do me?
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1072803-please-chance-me.html</a></p>

Dude, it is way early. A- shouldn’t hurt you even if they are counted as 3.7s. Many kids get a number of Bs and still get in. Raise your SAT. The 25/75% scores for the admitted class of 2014 are:
Math: 680 - 780
Critical reading: 650 - 740
Writing: 660 - 760
This should give you an idea for where you should have your scores. I would say go for at minimum a 2100, but a 2150 or 2200 would be better. Another thing is your ECs. You need more leadership and initiative. I’m telling you, colleges love that stuff, and that is the sort of thing that can make you stand out of an exceptionally qualified applicant pool. If your school is lacking a club or activity you want to do, get some friends and start one. For instance, I started a youth band in my church because I felt we were lacking it. I dunno if I’ll get in (I’ll find out early April. Finally, a word on race and affirmative action… Being Hispanic will help, but it isn’t an “in” as many people seem to think. Remember there are tons of highly qualified Hispanic students applying to Duke as well. I guess being native American would be the best because of the dearth of native americans… I digress. Anyway, I don’t chance (especially not for top ten schools [last year Duke tied Dartmouth and U of Chicago for 9th place on US news and world report]), but I will say that if you improve your ECs and standardized testing as I’ve suggested you will stand a good chance. Also do really well and submit at least one part of your application before Dec. 10. This way you will qualify for an interview. I imagine it helps your chances as Duke gets to know you personally, and you can learn a lot more about Duke that you couldn’t on the website. Remember, it is still very early in the college admissions process. I wish you the best of luck applying next year.

^ wow that’s choppy. I guess that what I get for typing it on an iPhone. I meant to say do really well on your essays. That is your chance to talk to the people deciding your fate have at least two or three adults read it, but also let some of your friends read them. However, make sure they don’t steal your essays. Another good thing to do would be research in high school. This option was never open to me, but if it is I would strongly encourage you to do it in some field you love. Meant to add this earlier… Are you taking the most advanced courseload possible? (Aps or IBs?). If not try self teaching them. This also shows initiative. For instance, this year I am self teaching multivariable calculus simply because I love math and my school doesn’t offer it. I apologize for the lengh of these, but good luck.
