Chance A Rising Senior For Syracuse/Newhouse Early Decision

Hey All, I'm a rising senior that plans on applying early decision to Syracuse University, specifically the Newhouse program. I'm going to put the college of human ecology as a second choice as I want to study sports management as well, but my preference is to study online/print/multimedia journalism at Newhouse.

Quick Summary: decent grades in some tough classes in tough school, average standarized test scores, great activities in my opinion ( I'll let you judge).

I've been overall a B+ student during my high school career. When senior year begins, I will have been enrolled in a few honors/AP courses: AP English Language, AP English Literature, AP Statistics, Biology Honors, German 3 Honors Algebra 2 Trig Honors, English 2 Honors.

I will finish with 4 years of English, Math, Language ( 2 years of Latin, 3 years of german), 4 years of history, 3 years of science, 4 years of religion ( though i realize it doesnt really count).

SAT: 1540.. Very disappointed especially since I'm applying to NewHouse. Will be doing a lot of practice this summer, and will take ACT which I believe I'll be better at.

My Activities/Accomplishments

-I am a professional football writer, and has covered the NFL for over two years. I've had articles featured/linked to on ESPN.com, CBS Sports, Fox Sports, The Houston Chronicle, and the National Football Post. In May 2011, I made a guest appearance on ESPN Radio in Hawaii to discuss the NFL Lockout and off season.

I write for National Football Authority, which has been labeled by ESPN as a "credible source". I cover the Baltimore Ravens for a blog on NFL.com during the football season. Beginning this fall, I will be a beat reporter and color analyst for my high school's sports radio station.

I am a member of my school's Campus Ministry team, a lector at my church, a baseball coach in my town, a member of the German Club ( will be president next year), tutor at my high school's higher achievement program, which is open to 7th graders.

I am cofounder of "Make A Kid Smile" campaign. The program occurs during Christmas time each year. Modell's and the baseball league I volunteer in has teamed up and gives free sneakers and other sporting ware to needy kids in my town.

I would say this covers most of the information about me. I visited Syracuse last summer, and will be doing so again this year once class is in session.. I intend on doing very well first marking period of senior year and will do what I can to make a lasting impression. I also want to improve my standardized test scores as much as possible, even though its a weakness of mine. Will my experience in the media industry be able to trump my low scores, or will it be an issue if I cant get them higher?

Chance Me please! All feedback is appreciated!

bump… any feedback appreciated.

Bump your SAT up 250-300 points or so and you should be in at both.

Hopefully I can do that, as it’ll make the admissions decision much easier ( hopefully). Thanks for advice!

Try the ACT? Many find it easier than the sat, and most accredited colleges accept it equally to the sat.

Yeah, thats the key I think. I plan on taking the ACT in October, and hopefully can do better on that, specifically with the math and reading sections.

bump…any help appreciated.

Anyone else have any advice/chance?

I have to agree with the above posters. I’m not that familiar with Newhouse, but you should be a good fit for Syracuse if you can improve your SAT to at least 1900. Or take the ACT. 1540 is barely the national average.

Chance me back?

Thanks for the feedback, despite not knowing much about newhouse… From my experience, a 1540 SAT would get me into some colleges at syracuse, but newhouse is most certainly pushing it…

I’m not sure. According to MyChances, the average accepted SAT range is really between 1800 and 2000.

Oh I see… I guess my high school has been a bit lucky… There is a thing called scattergem where we can see former applicants overall average/sat scores that applied to syracuse ( obviously didnt give names)… They got in with average scores, but as you mentioned, getting much higher scores would make things easier… ACT may be the way to go for me…

Anyone else?

Im applying nxt year to syracuse early decision to newhouse as well. Im also a B+ avg student wit bad SAT scores and from wat I have been told if u do good on the act it equals SAT and having great EC’s ( which you have) you stand a good chance

Thanks for the feedback. I’m hoping if I can receive a solid score on the ACT I’ll be able to get in. Applying early decision could give me a better chance of being admitted, and also getting good money as well.

Yea it can, i’ve been told that so im striving for a good act score as well

I’d say if you got around an 1800 you would be very competitive. Great Ec’s! Best of luck!

You definitely need to improve your SAT scores. I’m considering applying to either Newhouse or Medill at Northwestern through Early Decision. The journalism program for Syracuse is one of their top programs so it is more difficult to be admitted into than most of the colleges within the university (It’s definitely in their top three programs). These are the numbers specifically for Newhouse that my Newhouse tour guide gave me when I visited: Average GPA is a 3.8, SAT for verbal and math is 1290-1300, and they seriously review your application essay and stress the need to schedule an interview. Hope this helps! Also, I was just curious how you landed a writing job where you cover the NFL for major sports media outlets. I write for two local newspapers but what you’re writing for definitely tops that. How were you able to land such a cool job?

We’ll see what happens… I got the EC’s through my writing… I used to write for previous sites, got my work noticed, and here I am today…

Anyone else have feedback?

Thanks to all who have replied so far… Will do my best to get my scores up as much as I can.
