Chance a skeptic

** My primary concerns: 1) my extracurriculars are not very strong, 2) my courseload may not be as competitive as I previously thought, and 3) I may not stand out as prominently as I would like to from other applicants who share my GPA rank. I think UCLA is somewhat of a reach because of its popularity. **

I am applying as a declared English major. I listed Economics as my alternate. I am currently thinking of a double major in Creative Writing (or English if Creative Writing is not offered in some form) and Economics.

Thanks!

It’s a match. Your grades and scores are well within the range of those who are accepted. Weak ECs will hurt you somewhat less as compared to the private schools.

The UC system cares much less about ECs than most schools do, so your outstanding grades and test scores, assuming your essays are good, should be enough to get you in to UCLA

You have a good shot assuming your essays are good.

Definitely a match!

You come across as bright, inquisitive, and willing to accept an intellectual challenge.

I agree with the others, and, in addition hope you get in – the English Dept. loves students like you!

Math! Your SAT and GPA looks great. But your EC is not really strong… Well, GPA and SAT really will help you get into the school. 75%~85%

EC’s aren’t great, but not terrible. Everything else looks really good though! Make sure you write good essays, and I think you’re in!

GPA and SAT are strong. ECs, while not amazing, are not bad either.
UCLA: Match

Please update us if you get in! I have similar statistics  good luck!

–Atypical Asian–

gee, some negative comments towards what he does for extracurriculars. I have met UCLA students who barely did any extracurriculars during high school, and even my extracurriculars weren’t that stellar, especially since I didn’t have any leadership positions. In my opinion, his ECs were better than mine.

Were you accepted into UCLA? If so, what do you think made you a strong candidate?

–Atypical Asian–

@jerrry4445: (I am a female student.) I knew already before people commented on this thread that my ECs weren’t that great, which is the primary reason why I’m a bit nervous. I am surprised that you say you’ve met UCLA students who did very little ECs, since my impression of UCLA-caliber students has always been academically strong + well-rounded with ECs. But who knows?

@AtypicalAsian: UCLA’s decisions are scheduled for release on March 22nd. However, I have already gotten into UCR (Regents), UCI (CHP), and been offered Regents from UCSB, if any of that interests you.

@alwaysawriter Oh sorry for the gender confusion.

@Atypical Asian here’s my statistics: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/12319078-post17.html</a> since I really don’t know why I got accepted. (And disregard the comment about going to Davis. This was before I visited UCLA, which changed my decision regarding which college I went to).

ACCEPTED! (Thanks for the feedback on this thread.)

^ Awesome!!! I was accepted as well! Congratulations! :)
