Chance A Smart Indian!

Sorry if the title was over the top! Hope it didn't make me sound like an attention seeking prat! Just wanted everyone to reply to my post so thought of catching their eyes! Sorry , if it sounded to haughty!

I am really really nervous and to ease my nerves I was 'googling' random stuff and I stumbled upon CC. Chekced out a few posts and was really amazed!! Wish I had come across this wonderful site before!

Ok , here are my stats:-

I am an Indian international(male). I am in Grade 12 studying in the CBSE curriculum.

SAT Reasoning Test:- 2400 (With a 12/12 in the essay and that too on my first try!)
SAT 2 Subject test:- PHY-800 WORLD HISTORY-800 MATH LEVEL 2-690(I hate math! Just took it as a formality!)

GRADE 10 CBSE BOARD EXAM PERCENTAGE:- 96.7%
GRADE 11 OVERALL PRECENTAGE:- 87.6( I know! Fooled around a lot and took part in lots of activities!)

EXPECTED PERCENTAGE IN GRADE 12:- Around 90%

My high school grades are really good. Except for Math every other subject is above 90% and the transcript shows this. The only blot on my report card is a 78 (In math ofcourse!) which I got in my midyear exams.

EXTRACURRICULARS:-
I participated in the World Robotics Olympiad this year in Taiwan. I was representing my school. Unfortunately , we didnt win (we weren't expecting to with all the competition from the Japs and the AMericans!)
Also , won a medal from NCERT after scoring above 90% in their Science Olympiad in Grade 9(Will this matter since it was in secondary school!!!)
I regularly take part in debates , elocutions , public speaking competitions and this year I ended up winning 5 out of 6 inter school debates.
I am really into Model U.N. I have organized U.N Conferences in my school and participated w\in inter school Model U.N with considerable success.
I am a state level athlete. I have won 4 gold medals in cross country and long jump.
I have taken a military prep course students in NDA(National Defence Academy), Pune.
I am the editor of my school mag and yearbook. Also , serving as the President of my school Press Club.
I am really into soccer as well and I am the Captain of my school soccer team. I have undergone a national camp organized by the All India Football Federation (Under 19). Will be going for trials next month and hope to make it to the Under 19 team!

LEADERSHIP:-
I was elected as the Student Council Advisor of my school this year.
I was also the House Captain in grade 11 and a prefect in Grade 10.

CHARITY/COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT:-
Along with some of my friends I organzied an envrion. group titled GWINAM(Global Warming Is Not a Myth). We have managed to increase the membership upto 213 and the group is still going strong.
I was among a select group of students from my school who volunteered to help Tsunami victims in Rehab camps. Very very enriching experience.
I have also volunteered in Old Age homes.

My essay is stellar.Well , I hope so since my teacher's and Principal say that.
I have great rec's too from my tecaher's and Principal.

Well , I applied to Harvard , MIT , CalTech and Stanford(My 1st choice!GO CARDINALS!) with financial aid. That's it. And I am **** scared! What IF i get rejects from all the above colleges??

Please do tell me my chances! I know that the above colleges are really unpredicatable but I stil want to hear your views!!!

Thanks!

Cheers,
aspiringcardinal

Anyone???!!!!! Waiting to hear from you people!!!!

PS:- And wth is bump???

bump is to bring the thread into everyone's attention as a new post highlights it the thread.

Wow- 2400!
Basically i think you have a fantastic chance.
You have great scores and great EC's as well.
But with the colleges you applied to- even 2400's and with great EC's are regularly rejected.
But i really think you should apply to one Public college which is still open for applications like Michigan Ann arbor or Texas if you are for engineering.- you will be guranteed entry there as admissions there are more score based.
And you probably will get a good amount of Merit aid.
All the best.
ps- what do you want to major in?

People like you make me sad...................... where will i get in? :(

i think you have a very good chance of getting into one of those places...but remember stanford is going to give a full ride to only one internationa this year so competition might be stiff...you should apply to a few other places that are'nt as selective

Thanks shreya and tanveer!

Its really scary to know that even students getting 2400 get rejected by such top colleges. But , well thats Harvard and Stanford for you. I want to major in either Nuclear Physics or Computer Science(Yet undecided!). I also want to minor in International Politics/Relations.

I dont know why I didn't apply to other so called 'safety' schools! But , its either these 4 colleges or nothing else. If I don't get in then its NUS or a good engineering college in India. Stanford is my first choice. And the fact that they are so stingy with financial aid really makes things complicated.
But , then I am also surprised that some students with scores in the range of 1700-1900 also get into Ivies with aid...But , they must be super talented..

Hey by the way Shreya what are you planning to major in? And which colleges did you apply to? Have you applied to Stanford?

well have it your way but if you applied and got into michigan or texas(which you pretty much will)- its much better then any college in India.
according to me- you are screwing up a great opportunity.

btw-i am majoring in economics.
an i am not applying to stanford- i already know i won't get in.
and i want to be near Boston- so i am applying to colleges mostly there.

my list is rather long-
CMU, cornell, yale, JHU,
urbana champaign, mich ann arbor, umass amherst
amherst , carleton , brandeis , emory

so umm thats about it.

Great stats! For colleges like those you've listed, you can't really say whether you'll get in or not. You have as good a chance as anyone else :)

Btw, you hate maths but you're thinking of majoring in Comp Sci.? Reputable Comp Sci. courses consist of half to one-third of maths itself. Even Physics courses are going to have a lot of maths :s

^well that happens, i want to major in economics which requires a lot of maths too, and i can't do maths at all (maths 2c i got a 660 which is like 54 %ile) :( , but then you can't have everything you like i guess.

Well , Shreya I pretty much think you are right. But U Mich dosen't give financial aid to Intl students. And the colleges I listed atleast give aid to Intl students. I know I am screwing up a great opportunity but U Michigan isn't Stanford or Harvard is it? Anyways , let me see which other U.S college I can apply to. The deadlines of all the top 10 colleges have passed right? So which other college can I apply to?

HELL!!! I deserve a superb college!
I am unique you see...Just like everyone else!

This is just my 2cents..Don't take it seriously.. Most smart people are pretty good in math

Have you considered Macalester? It has a great International Relations program and they do have a quite strong (I guess) Computer Science department. The have a strong commitment to international students and I have heard that they plan to recruit even more international students this year. Their deadline is January 15th, by the way.

oh sorry- i didn't know that michigan doesn't give aid to international student.

by the way- are you preparing for the jee/?

'HELL!!! I deserve a superb college!'
well i wish that could work for everyone but sadly it doesn't.
thats why we have safeties.......................
you seem pretty great, but as Shreya suggests you- you should have safeties.
mine is ohio columbus- though i don't want to go there.

Shreya:- Yup! I am preparing for IIT-JEE. But , trust me my chances are really freakin low. I mean they take the top 4000 out of 200,000 candidates!! Seriously!!! You need to like ace the test completely... I wrote a mock JEE practice paper and I like got 54/180 in Phy and 10/180 in Math!!!! My pal who scored 98 in CBSE boards in math got around 36/180 on the JEE Simulation! The SAT Math and SAT 2 Physics seem so petty in comparsion to the IIT-JEE!!! And even out of the 4000 seats around 100 are for the OBC's and BC's.

was the mock test fiit jee aits? whats your fiit jee percentile?
you can tell if you are getting in or not by that.
well out of the 200000, you have competition from mainly 20000 candidates.

you can always take an year off.you know do something worthwhile.

shreya:- Nope! Mine is Brilliant tutorials. I also subscribed to this institution in Mumbai where they send IIT practice papers to work on. They sent me 12 and I have only practised 4 of them. That's why I am hell bent on getting into the colleges I applied to!Personally, I feel IIT is really really tough to crack unless you are pretty smart and are completely thorough with the basics. What about you? I assume you must be writing it eh?

PS:- I am applying to U Michigan Ann Harbour

Karpov:- I cannot afford to take a year off. That is simply not possible. I have worked my butt off in the past 2 years so that I could get into a superb college. Well, I don't want to speculate but IF i don't get into the colleges I applied to then I have to choose a good engineering college in India or NUS.Lets see. Fingers crossed!

no, actually, i am in commerce.
why will i go to iit if i want to major in economics?
not that i am smart enough to get in.
i actually live in an IIT, thats why i was curious............

You have done extremely well by Indian standards.

I think your chances are good if you can pay more than half. For more I think you need significant national level achievement at the likes of Harvard.

There are many Indians applying with 2400 and high grades.

You would do well to apply to some colleges lower down the food chain.

I don't understand Indians who post here applying going to low tier 2 colleges. Sure you can get money there but better to go to top Indian school! Kalamazoo? What are you going to do with that in Mumbai

haha ur gonna major in computer science? isn't that sorta mathy too =) and your're an indian that doesn't like math...you dont see those very often :D
